richc12 84
ive got a 8.5 month old pup which i intend to work when shes mature enough... ive had her out and about on the shoot i beat for, trying to expose her to all the diff sights and smells etc since she was old enough to be out... the last couple of weeks, ive noticed a "light bulb " turning on with her shes hunting by herself and has caught a dozen or so rats( young uns) so far... Q.... why does she eat them???? will she be less inclined to do so with a mature rat??? shes had her 1st rag on a dead fox, was unsure at first.. barking/nipping.. but with encouragement got the message and had a good rag.. is there any advise you lads would reccomend i could be doing through the summer/autumn to help bring her on for when the time is right? please note shes my 1st terrier i intend to work, so where both learning together, and all advise is greatly appreciated... thanks... rich Quote Link to post

richc12 84
ALLI.... missed your post.... im not quick enough either fella... thanks for your advice, like you say, im in no rush! gonna give her a try about december in a few shallow spots and in the falsies litterd about the shoot... will just see how she shapes up until then.. my biggest fear, is pushing her to soon and ruining her, so the gently approach seems to suit us both... thanks again Quote Link to post
Cleanspade 3,324
sounds like your doing a good job apart from plenty of stock breaking and maybe a little bit of ratting there aint much to do. its a waiting game. try to hook up with a keeper or terrier lad that has a seasoned dog. take it to a few shows you might meet lads that can help you enter your terrier. good luck when the season comes. another thing you can do is try and land as much permision as you can. becouse if it goes well you will need to keep the work coming Quote Link to post
Dosser 52
Let her hunt the cover, of course she'll meet bunnies but dont worry too much while shes young. later on in the summer hopefully she'll meet a 3/4 grown cub who wont want to run too far, and who will give her the run around in the bushes, that shuold get her fired up, then its a natural progression into the ground. best of luck.
