its not the killing of any animal its what you do with it after its dead,,in the scottish borders its a an allout yearly thing on the grouse moors sheep country arable land to keep rabbits foxes and other things down to an aceptable lever ,lucky this year i got my permision down to an aceptable level so can leave them be at moment , and get on with makeing hay when the sun shines , localy we box trap shoot then snare them , dog them ferret them ,but i only do it to get food and sport as a rabbits are worthless to sell, most hill keepers shoot and leave to let the buzzards and pests eat them to leave the hallowed grouse ,

if you do a job in the winter you dont ned to much summer worku nles you have to much land to work just like creel and lobster potting no good setting traps every were unless you can work them, i see lots out with airguns snares etc were if they had done there work in the cold months then they would just need the odd walk round at times on there hallowed permision , then come end of july start thinin them out as you cant beat three qaurter grown rabbs for the pot

Eh! You cheaky monkey, ive always upheld that none of it is rocket science, or we would be setting fenn traps in moon craters by now

The trouble is, there are too many ego's out there and way too much girly hair pulling for my liking... They need to "get a life" ;)and i mean a real life, not some computer generated dream world...

I've kept quiet on this one because I can see both sides of the argument.

There is no doubt that there is a huge difference between those who hunt the humble coney for sport, and those who provide a service to control their exploding population.

When a pest controller is asked to control a growing rabbit population, he (or she) is likely to get short shrift from a landowner if he suggests that it would be a good idea to allow the rabbits to breed freely during the summer months.

Having said all that, there is no doubt that bringing down the viable population of breeding adults during the winter months when the rabbits are breeding less (they breed all year round in the south) is far better pest control.

Would I condemn any pest controller who carries out rabbit control during the summer months? No. And nor should anyone else.

Is enough control carried out during the winter months? No, partly because the numbers of rabbits seen during the shorter days rarely worry landowners enough for them to call in the pest controller.

Interesting thread.

matt thats very true in some circumstances ,and all the private gardens i do for rabbits fencing and caching is always when there a few about june july, but on the farms we do at moment well not saw many im hopeing ,to see a few shortly and once the corns up and crops hopefully ,therl be more ,but if youre at it regular lamp and ferret and snare you can put adent in it plus with the weather we had rain wise a lot took a flooding and with the bad snow ,,glad we have more than rabbits etc or it would be maybe poor to what im used to
