chris hickling 14
if you pay for a dog its not been rescued but some people are desprate for a 50p rosset lol
skycat 6,174
Even if you get a dog from a rescue centre you still have to pay money: a lot charge well over £100 for a dog. The only rescue dog you don't actually pay for is one you have taken in yourself either as a stray or because someone handed it over to you because they didn't want it any more for whatever reason, reasons which often involve the owner having neglected the animal. Flamin'Nora! 50
well said chris something that amuses me is when people say iv got a rescue lurcher and you find out they got it from the pound at 10 weeks old a puppy is a blank canvas at that age its not seen much of the world its not like they have saved it from a life of misery been badly treated ffs Edited April 27, 2010 by Flamin'Nora! Hollie 21
I don't agree, whether you have taken a dog from a bad situation OR got it from a centre, it is still a rescue dog, you have to pay for a dog from rescues so do these dogs not count as rescue dogs because they have been paid for? PINNACLE 2,297
Mods you might want to move this back. We got our lurcher as a 12 week old puppy from Celia Cross Greyhound Rescue nr Guildford (www.celiacross.org.uk) after failing to find a Greyhound that suited us. Yes she was a blank canvass but you also have to realise you do not know what you are getting or how they will turn out as you dont see the parents. What is important is that she does not go back to the rescue center at 1 or 2 and that is our responsibility. I admit she has been close a couple of times but that is only because she has had her Saluki hat on. We were lucky I guess in that we knew half the storey and the Dams side was traceable. As for showing we have entered her in this class a couple of times. I don't think this is a serious class but it does give people with dogs that can or can't enter other classes a chance to take part and win a 50p rosette. I have seen a three legged Greyhound win and a Beagle bitza win in the past and they both deserved it. We like to enter as we hope it will get people thinking you can get more than you might expect from a rescue centre and that they are a good place to look for a dog. Some entries I have seen have been stunning and we don't think ours is bad looking but she does not stand a chance against beaten up old Greyhound and we know that. Its not the winning it is the taking part and if one person takes a look at a rescue centre after seeing a good selection of dogs in this class, all the better in my opinion. As for paying, I think in most cases you do not have to pay for a rescue dog but they do push hard for a donation to the charity and £100 plus is suggested, I was told I didn't have to pay but I still made a decent donation to the Celia Cross Charity and I paid for her to be spayed rather than take their money which they offered so as far as I am concerned it could have been cheaper to buy from a breeder/dealer or even off here. Most of these charities or pounds do a great job and they rely on donations from people homing dogs and from fund raisers and it is the sort of advertising such a rescue dog class" at shows that gets people through their doors, it did for us. Usually because some dumb ass does not get there dog spayed and she gets pregnant, they then realise they can't cope with five dogs let alone one. Or the bitch gets booted out when she is pregnant and they are born in a rescue shelter. Either way they are the lucky ones as many fair a worse fate.
