Distemper.....A word of warning

Recommended Posts

Well that puts a whole new slant on it then :notworthy: people putting unfounded rumours out and panicking people about what could harm their ferrets

Well George are you saying that the vet and owners in Chesterfield are not telling the truth then.

Tiggypud

Lost me here George? A vet not telling the truth where have I said that? Owners in Chesterfield not telling the truth have nt mentioned them either? Now go back and read my posts where I said about people making out there is an out break of distemper rife when PM have clearly shown that not to be the case is that right? Has a veterinarian diagnosed and treated ferrets for distemper when as the report says it is in fact not distemper and that by giving vacines can actually give them distemper which does nt really help does it?

Wullie I to got that email from NFWS, and as you are on Mercia ferret site you are aware that there has been ferrets in Chesterfield who have been diagnosed, by post mortum, as having distemper.

Why do people not beleive that distemper is out there and killing ferrets or is this site turning into Shiela and Jean appreciation society where they can say and do no wrong.

There has been cases in Stafford, Chesterfield, and Peterborough all confirmed.

The NFWS is not the all seeing oracle, its only as good as the information is given, remember GIGO.

Well said .. Sheila ferrets were not pm'd because she wasnt at home when they died & they were more than 24 hours dead when found so seemingly they couldnt be pm'd ...

So i am pretty sure that her ferrets were ok before they were left as i know she wouldnt have left very sick ferrets ... so it must be something that acts very very quickly ... that in its self is a worry

i dont think anyone's obligated to post pm reports on the public domain but theres 2 potential diseases flooring ferrets out there & its not about the '' faces'' its about the welfare of the ferrets all these people profess to love .

sadly point scoring seems to be the order of the day regardless of the fact that ferret have died or have had to be put to sleep .. i think loosing 70 ferrets like the couple have in the origonal post on this thread is devestating

Hats off to Mercia & to John Goddard who have cancelled shows regardless off the loss especially to mercia who use shows to fund the rescue

keep your ferrets at home simple as that

Thank-Goodness common sense prevails!

This post took the words right out of my mouth, regardless of which disease it is (Coronavirus or Distemper)it is killing ferrets therefore in my opinion all ferret shows and P.R events should be put on hold.

How sad that the N.F.W.S feel that their P.R ferrets are worth this risk just for a few pounds,it is a good job that DEFRA didn't take that view over the foot and mouth / bird flu / blue tongue epidemics!

Well done to Rose Morris and John Goddard for taking the stance they have, with possibly greater revenue loss than the N.F.W.S.

Its very sad when when you still read about shows being advertised... theres no excuse now its not a secret & its posted all over the place... i think most folks would rather donate what they would have spent at a show if its for a good cause than go along

but if shows are advertised some people will attend

I also applaude Rose & John for cancelling shows.

We too have cancelled a show and yes it will hit funds for the rescue hard. I am not putting a blanket ban on all our shows but cancelling them one at a time. I have been trying to keep up to date with all the information and which areas the distemper/corona is in, hopefully these outbreaks will come to a halt and as advised once we get 30 clear days from the last outbreak I see no reason why shows should not go ahead, with neccessary precautions in place. Of course all this is open to conjecture and depends on people being honest as to the reporting of any further outbreaks.

As an aside it still amuses me that people seem to refuse to accept the fact that canine distemper is out there and insist that it is actually corona virus when there is proof distemper is killing ferrets.

probably because you can safe guard against distemper with a vaccine & although vets opinions of weather they actually need it varys ... its still available for owners who choose to vaccinate against it

Leeview probably thinks Distemper and coronavirus are inherited.

I wasn't aware that there was any treatment for CD in ferrets other than pts.

And I've not heard any cases of the CD virus giving ferrets full-blown Distemper. It raises antibodies against the CD virus but that's all. Cases of anaphalactic shock are pretty rare too.

I have also heard that some ferret owners are trying to buy the distemper vaccine to administer themselves surely this is a job for the vet.

just done a google search in destemper and got this from wiki

The type of vaccine should be approved for the type of animal being inoculated, or else the animal could actually contract the disease from the vaccine.

Can we get this vaccine??

Ok this topic started with a warning of DISTEMPER rearing its ugly head

A newsletter from the NFWS states that pm's done on ferrets shows this not to be the case?

Now the quote above IF true does cause concern if owners are having ferrets vaccinated aren't they more likely to be enhancing the spread of a disease that has been wrongly diagnosed by owners being misled?
