Recommended Posts

WELL STABS ,

I DUG TO A FEW DOGS FROM THAT AREA ..... NEVER SAW A BAD UN ........

PPs JASPER , I THINK I REMEMBER HAVING SEEN HIM AT THE OLD QUARRY ABOVE ELDON BRICKWORKS .... THOUGH THERE WAS A LOT OF DOGS AND A FEW MEN THERE THAT DAY ..........

ALL THE DIGGING DOGS THEM DAYS IN BISHOP AREA WERE NEARLY OF A TYPE .......... LONG BODIED , SHORT LEGGED ..WHITE SHORT AND ROUGH COATED WITH GOOD HEADS ,...... JM HAD THE FIRST BLACK UN I HAD EVER SEEN ! ....... AND HIM AND OTHERS BROUGHT AND BRED MANY TOP CLASS FELLS INTO THE AREA

AFTER A FEW YEARS THE BOX HEADED LAKIES WERE CREEPING IN ....... A NICER STAMP TO LOOK AT ........THOUGH NO BETTER TO WORK THAN THE SEALYHAM / RUSSEL TYPES

YOU WOULDNT BELIVE IT BUT AS KIDS FERRETING ... IF WE CHANCED ON SOMETHING TO GROUND WE OFTEN WENT ALONG TO M.D.s ALLOTMENT GRABBED UP TOBY AND WENT DIGGING ,..... WITHOUT A SO MUCH AS A BY YER LEAVE TO THE OWNER ! ........ A MATE JUST HAD AN UNDERSTANDING WITH A FEW LADS AND OFTEN IT COULD HAPPEN 3 DAYS IN A ROW ! . HE HAD THE SAME ARRANGEMENT WITH ANOTHER SEALYHAM OWNER FROM THE TOP OF HIS STREET AND OFTEN JUST DROPPED THE DOGS BACK IN THE KENNELS AFTER A LONG DAYS GRAFT ... UNWASHED AND UNCARED FOR , IT HAD TO COME TO AN END AND IT DID .....!

BIGGER FOOL HIMSELF ........

NOW HE STILL HAS THE SEALYHAMS ...... AND STILL WORKS THEM HARD ... THOUGH I THINK THEY ARE GETTING A LOT BIGGER THAN THE ORIGINALS ................... ?

YEP I HEARD THE STORY OF THE DACHS CROSSES , KNEW OLD TOMMY WHO WAS INVOLVED IN THE BREEDING , STILL SEE HIM FROM TIME TO TIME AS HE FLYS ROLLER PIGEONS STILL ..............

THE ORIGINAL DOG ... SKIPPER ....CAME FROM THE POUND ............... BOUGHT OUT ON BAIL :D .... BY BILLY DOWSON A SPORTING MAN FROM COCKFIELD AREA WHO WORKED HIM HARD , THE DOGS PROWESS SPREAD FAR AND WIDE , OTHER DOGS OF A SIMILAR TYPE WERE BRED TO HIM ........... HE WAS A WORKER AND A DECENT STUD , PRODUCED GOOD DIGGING PUPS ..............

A TOP CLAS OLD PIGEON MAN WHO I WORKED WITH TILL HIS RETIREMENT OFTEN SAW SKIPPER WORK ON RABY EASTATE ......... AND HE STATED THAT HE WAS AS GOOD AS HE EVER DUG TO .............

OF COURSE AT THAT TIME . MOST OF THE TERRIERS IN THE AREA WERE OF THE SAME TYPE ................. SKIPPER WASNT THE FIRST THOUGH HE WAS HARD TESTED AND GREATLY USED AT STUD . SO HAD AN OVERALL MORE LAST INFLUANCE THAN MANY OTHERS .........

OLD HAROLD GUNNS DOGS WERE ALSO WORKERS OF THE SAME TYPE THROWN IN THE MIX .......

AND OF COURSE ............ THIER DESCENDANTS .......THE DOGS OF M.R. . C.R. .. AND J.T

ALL THE BEST

Great post from Duckwing going further back in the breeding of the north east dogs.the only other Ilmer sealyham types ive heard of were owned by 2 friends one called clayton whos breeding was used by jw in scotland.I think jw and the northeast men crossed or outcrossed between eachother.would like to see a few pics of sealyhams types what are still around and worked now. Its nice to see by the number of views these posts have had there still is a good interest in working sealyhams. all the best markantony

WELL MARK ,

I KNOW OLD JW QUITE WELL ................... A REAL GENT

I OFTEN GET A VISIT FROM HIM WHEN HES IN THE AREA ......

HE HAS OUT CROSSED TO TWO WHITE LINES , AT LEAST ONE WAS THROUGH A BITCH I SORTED HIM OUT FROM AN AUCKLAND LAD WHO HAD LINE BRED HIS GOOD DURHAM SEALYHAM DIGGING BITCH , WORKED BY A COUSIN OF HIS .... AND ......... LONG TIME MATE OF MINE ............

THE OTHER WAS THROUGH ME AND MY DIGGING PARTNER FROM T.D.s OLD RUSSEL LINES USED AT STUD .... BOTH TO MY KNOWLEDGE HAVE BEEN KEPT IN HIS BLOOD AFTER VERY FAVOURABLE RESULTS , I KNOW JW HAS HAD A FEW OF THE DURHAM SEALYHAMS THROUGH THE USUAL LADS ....... WHEATHER THEY TURNED OUT WELL AND WERE KEPT OR DISCARDED IAM NOT SURE ........

Well give them to your mates then! Don't get rid of the lot in a moment of anger.   You will regret it once your back on your feet.   FTB

Everybody from around here must have done a bit over that quarry and the plantation beside the brickworks at some point.Same as going rabbiting up Bruss.

I remember seeing my first hare over Fylands as a bairn when I was nesting...I stood there with mouth open as it loped away from us.

You're likely to come across a bit more than rabbits if you're lamping up Bruss these days Pointer

i dont over over fylands/copy now since i live at the other end on town but when i just had terriers we saw the odd hare.a few years ago there was a bit of set aside in that area which held allsorts and my lurcher bitch caught a few young hares out the seat one summer which thankfully could just be let go again.

i dont do anything "round the doors" now, dont need to,but i cant help but smile when im setting off early morning going to the dales or fells and see some hunting newbie going across the local fields with a ferret box and a dog.i bet some days id see more within walking distance of my house than i do after being on the road for a couple of hours. :clapper:

  • 2 months later...

I've just found this post & was glad to see so many people praising these dogs. :boogie:

I keep & hunt a pack consisting Sporting Lucas Terriers, Sealyham X JRTs, & JRT. I've no complaints but they're not for everyone as they tend to be "slow to enter & are usually bayers". :big_boss:

Thanks for some great reading here boys.

Duckwing, very interesting, as always.

Met MR & CR a few times over the years, had a few chats about their dogs, good stuff.

One thing you mentioned Duckwing is the tale of picking up the 'local' digging dog. We had one too, Snowy, a Russell/Beagle type of thing, wandered round the streets on a particular north Liverpool estate. We'd just make a quick dash back, search for Snowy round the streets and leg off to have a 'propper' dig! Always happy to go, he knew the crack and never let us down. Dropping him back off later, usually peppered, where he'd just feck off wandering again!

Still picked up the now 'old' Snowy when i'd passed my test and was venturing much further afield. We had some half decent dogs then but Snowy was still a yardstick to measure 'em by.
