markantony 0
WELL LADS , IN MY YOUTH I DUG TO THE DURHAM SEALYHAM TYPES . MANY TIMES .... SOME GREAT DOGS AMONGST THEM ....... THE ORIGINAL DOG THAT THE LINE WAS SET FROM . WAS BOUGHT OUT OF THE BISHOP AUCKLAND POLICE DOG POUND .. BREEDING UNKNOWN AN OLD FELLA I KNOW DUG TO THAT DOG MANY TIMES AND NEVER FAILED ....... ALL THE BEST DUCKWING I did not know that Duckwing...did you ever see PP's Jasper? I always thought he was a Sealyham of the stamp that MR and CR kept, but JM revealed the breeding a few years ago in an article in EDRD and I was shocked to find that there was Dachshund in there. I have heard the polce dog kennel story of how the north east boys got their first dogs. And also that they crossed bull in them but havent heard about the dachshund Quote Link to post
Guest AngelicAcid
So what is the story with the police kennels? A conversation between 2 people when i went to see the litter i mentioned also told of A dog been from police pound. Wonder whether this is connected? Quote Link to post
DUCKWING 302
WELL STABS , I DUG TO A FEW DOGS FROM THAT AREA ..... NEVER SAW A BAD UN ........ PPs JASPER , I THINK I REMEMBER HAVING SEEN HIM AT THE OLD QUARRY ABOVE ELDON BRICKWORKS .... THOUGH THERE WAS A LOT OF DOGS AND A FEW MEN THERE THAT DAY .......... ALL THE DIGGING DOGS THEM DAYS IN BISHOP AREA WERE NEARLY OF A TYPE .......... LONG BODIED , SHORT LEGGED ..WHITE SHORT AND ROUGH COATED WITH GOOD HEADS ,...... JM HAD THE FIRST BLACK UN I HAD EVER SEEN ! ....... AND HIM AND OTHERS BROUGHT AND BRED MANY TOP CLASS FELLS INTO THE AREA AFTER A FEW YEARS THE BOX HEADED LAKIES WERE CREEPING IN ....... A NICER STAMP TO LOOK AT ........THOUGH NO BETTER TO WORK THAN THE SEALYHAM / RUSSEL TYPES YOU WOULDNT BELIVE IT BUT AS KIDS FERRETING ... IF WE CHANCED ON SOMETHING TO GROUND WE OFTEN WENT ALONG TO M.D.s ALLOTMENT GRABBED UP TOBY AND WENT DIGGING ,..... WITHOUT A SO MUCH AS A BY YER LEAVE TO THE OWNER ! ........ A MATE JUST HAD AN UNDERSTANDING WITH A FEW LADS AND OFTEN IT COULD HAPPEN 3 DAYS IN A ROW ! . HE HAD THE SAME ARRANGEMENT WITH ANOTHER SEALYHAM OWNER FROM THE TOP OF HIS STREET AND OFTEN JUST DROPPED THE DOGS BACK IN THE KENNELS AFTER A LONG DAYS GRAFT ... UNWASHED AND UNCARED FOR , IT HAD TO COME TO AN END AND IT DID .....! BIGGER FOOL HIMSELF ........ NOW HE STILL HAS THE SEALYHAMS ...... AND STILL WORKS THEM HARD ... THOUGH I THINK THEY ARE GETTING A LOT BIGGER THAN THE ORIGINALS ................... ? YEP I HEARD THE STORY OF THE DACHS CROSSES , KNEW OLD TOMMY WHO WAS INVOLVED IN THE BREEDING , STILL SEE HIM FROM TIME TO TIME AS HE FLYS ROLLER PIGEONS STILL .............. THE ORIGINAL DOG ... SKIPPER ....CAME FROM THE POUND ............... BOUGHT OUT ON BAIL .... BY BILLY DOWSON A SPORTING MAN FROM COCKFIELD AREA WHO WORKED HIM HARD , THE DOGS PROWESS SPREAD FAR AND WIDE , OTHER DOGS OF A SIMILAR TYPE WERE BRED TO HIM ........... HE WAS A WORKER AND A DECENT STUD , PRODUCED GOOD DIGGING PUPS .............. A TOP CLAS OLD PIGEON MAN WHO I WORKED WITH TILL HIS RETIREMENT OFTEN SAW SKIPPER WORK ON RABY EASTATE ......... AND HE STATED THAT HE WAS AS GOOD AS HE EVER DUG TO ............. OF COURSE AT THAT TIME . MOST OF THE TERRIERS IN THE AREA WERE OF THE SAME TYPE ................. SKIPPER WASNT THE FIRST THOUGH HE WAS HARD TESTED AND GREATLY USED AT STUD . SO HAD AN OVERALL MORE LAST INFLUANCE THAN MANY OTHERS ......... OLD HAROLD GUNNS DOGS WERE ALSO WORKERS OF THE SAME TYPE THROWN IN THE MIX ....... AND OF COURSE ............ THIER DESCENDANTS .......THE DOGS OF M.R. . C.R. .. AND J.T ALL THE BEST DUCKWING 1 Quote Link to post

Rabbit Hunter 6,613
Interesting stuff Duckwing, nice to hear stories from years past, also living near the areas you mention...seems the north east has been a hotbed for digging dogs in the past... Quote Link to post
Stabs 3
WELL STABS , I DUG TO A FEW DOGS FROM THAT AREA ..... NEVER SAW A BAD UN ........ PPs JASPER , I THINK I REMEMBER HAVING SEEN HIM AT THE OLD QUARRY ABOVE ELDON BRICKWORKS .... I've had some fun in that quarry over the years! We used to rake around over there with some champion racing whippets owned by a bloke who used to drink in the Cross Keys. He'd have killed us if he knew we were running them around there. We were all mad keen on the dogs back then and we all wanted terriers. There seemed to be loads of that stamp around back then but they're all but gone around there now. There used to be one that used to roam the streets around Sunnydale, always carrying a half brick in it's mouth...used to terrify us! We all went our way in the end and I'm the only one out of my mates who is still into the dogs, which is a shame. I spoke to PP about a Bedlington greyhound a good few years ago and asked if he had any old pics of Jasper, or his old bully Oscar, but he didn't...such were the times. Quote Link to post

HI STABS , ALL THE AREAS AROUND THAT AREA HOLD SPECIAL MEMORIES FOR ME ........... PAST DIGS ........ LOST DOGS ......... THE TERRIFIC HIGHS AND CRUSHING LOWS OF A YOUNG TERRIERMANS LIFE ........ THE OLD FASHIONED TYPE OF WHITE TERRIER ..........WE KNEW ........... LONG BODIED AND SHORT LEGGED ......HAS BEEN GIVEN UP BY MANY FOR THE MORE SANITISED RUSSEL TYPE WE NOW SEE A LOT OF NEW TERRIER OWNERS WOULD LOOK DOWN THEIR NOSES IF THEY SAW A BISHOP BOY WALK DOWN THE LANES WITH A ONE OF THE OLD TYPES ............. NOT ME ............... I KNOW WHAT THEY ARE CAPABLE OF ALL THE BEST DUCKWING Quote Link to post
pointer 543
Everybody from around here must have done a bit over that quarry and the plantation beside the brickworks at some point.Same as going rabbiting up Bruss. Quote Link to post

I remember seeing my first hare over Fylands as a bairn when I was nesting...I stood there with mouth open as it loped away from us. You're likely to come across a bit more than rabbits if you're lamping up Bruss these days Pointer Quote Link to post

Its nice to see by the number of views these posts have had there still is a good interest in working sealyhams. all the best markantony Quote Link to post
