its ma baw 51
I generally find that lurchermen fall into 2 catogories.... Those that have a dog for life and those that go through dogs like they are batteries for the remote. Now, normally the guy who buys a dog for life generally gets one good dog in his life time, one world beater that the rest will never live up to. He accepts this however and is happy with his lot and as a result, his "companion" pays him tenfold. This lurcherman isn't out to kill everything in sight, he is happy getting a couple of right good chases and one or two for the pot. He normally hunts alone or occasionally with company. Now, the flip side of the coin is the guy who is never happy with his lot but will tell you they are the bees knees. You'll wonder why he has sold said world beater the next time you meet him a month later. He is constantly trying to impress the boys and strives to get the best dog possible. He goes through several good dogs in a more experienced hand but they never last long enough to make the grade. He very rarely goes out himself, what would be the point in that? Lurchers are a badge of honour, something to boast about, to be the big man in the pub. He runs his dog till it drops, trying to get massive bags. Just an observation....... Quote Link to post

Guest bluemink
Tbh I think your wrong. Imo theres the proper lurcher man who will not hesitate in getting rid the poor lurchers but will keep the good ones. He will go out and try to get good numbers, not for bagging rights, but because he wants to test his dogs and because he is good at what he does. 1 Quote Link to post

I hear what your saying, there are people like that but they are usually just an older version of the option 2 in my view. These boards are all about opinions and I appreciate yours. lucky 578
theres a 3rd type and this is the rarest type of all...... the lurcherman that culls dogs that dont make the grade and starts a fresh with another, the higher his standards the more he will go through...... 2 Quote Link to post
Big bald beautiful 1,231
Im a mixture of both i like a dog to take a rabbit or two on a walk out, a dog must try, i like to lamp also. but ive had bad luck, losing dogs to hit and runs, trains and broken legs etc. my best dog was killed at 18 mths old, and since havnt had much good luck. fingers crossed my next runner will live longer and turn out well. i dont need a world beater but i want a game tryer.. wuyang 513
All my dogs will always be for life. As for good dog men that pass a dog on as a pet, well thats just they can't make a good dog out of it in most circumstances. I don't know what some people expect out of a dog. Most dogs will make good workers, very few fail through fault of their own...fact. Quote Link to post
