sy247 0
Sorry to hijack the tread. I've been thinking of getting a BP pistol for a while now. Can you use Pyrodex? Is it hard to get a BP certificate? Are the guns fun to shoot or just plain hassle? Any info would be great because the only venture I ever had in to BP guns was a Harrington & Richards muzzle loading shotgun, didn't work out that well to be honest. John Yes you can use Pyrodex instead of black powder. You do not have to have an explosives certificate for it. I believe it is more stable than BP. I am not aware that it is hard to get a BP certificate. I put 2 BP pistols on my FAC and was granted them no problem. I have downloaded the explosives certificate application and it all looks pretty straight forward. You also need a certificate from HSE to transport. I think they are really good fun to shoot. Plenty of drama, lots of smoke and noise. They are also surprisingly accurate when you consider you are firing a lump of lead down an un-rifled barrel. Find a local club where they shoot them and have a go with one and see what you think. Quote Link to post
JonathanL 4
I am a member of a target club and applied for: .22LR bolt action .22LR semi-auto .357 gallery rifle .36 black powder pistol .44 black powder pistol shotgun This is my first FAC / SCG. I had my interview recently and the FEO said he would bring my license with him when he comes to inspect my cabinet. He indicated there wasn't any issue with what I had applied for. I demonstrated good reason for all calibres - target shooting. If you're applying for 3 of the same calibre you need a good reason for holding each one. So for prone target shooting you might have one rifle, maybe another for gallery target, and possibly another for vermin/pest control, though the gallery might also be suitable for field. At the end of the day, if you can prove reasonable cause then they will struggle to turn you down! (doesn't stop them trying though!) Thats about the size of it, but as already said if this is your first FAC application you will need to put a strong case for them to give you 3 x .22lr on first grant! I'd say you did well, especially as a .22lr Semi is hardly known as a target tool, but you have not attempted to get 3 x .22lr.. ATB!! .22 Semi-auto's are commonly used for target shooting. Granted, maybe not in his particular club from the sounds of it but they are common. Three .22's is no problem. As another poster has said, if you have a good reason for each then you'll get it. I have three .22's, two rim-fires and a Hornet, all of which have always only ever been described as .22 Rifle on my cert. J. Quote Link to post

John Muzzle-loaders are fun to shoot, you just have to like cleaning guns afterwards. Don't have a BP cert but I don't think it's too troublesome to get. Probably the best powder to use is Hogdon 777 as it's easy to clean. J. Quote Link to post
