Pharoah hounds

Recommended Posts

O.K so I know it's a really long shot but does anyone know of working Pharoah Hounds?

I don't see any reason why people wouldn't work them as they were bred for bushing and coursing rabbits...I assume it's just the rarity factor.

If I had the space, time and money I would, maybe in a couple of years.

Everything I've read so far seems positive, they're an ancient breed that are virtually free from genetic disease and health problems which is rare as **** in the modern dog world. They come in at 21-25" 45-60lbs, easy to handle and train, intelligent with a stable temperament and big prey drive.

All that of course is just stuff I've read, I've never even seen one let alone seen them work. Would love to hear from someone that has seen them work.

All those Mediterranean hounds are bred to yap, thats what the hunters want. Podenco, cirneco, podengo, etc all chase rabbits in cover in a large pack, and either flush to a gun or catch. Sort of like a springer or beagle cross greyhound. If you live in place that has tall grass and rushes with lots of rabbits laying out and you are not poaching :whistling: then one of these working bred Mediterranean hounds would be handy.

Fantastic video thanks for posting. Now that's how to clear your land of rabbits!

It's certainly a different style of hunting dog...a bushing and coursing dog in one neat package. I've heard that they use ferrets with these dogs too.

There are a few running at the racing lately and the two points that stand out are that they can never catch them, sometimes it takes 20 minutes! and the other is that many of them are VERY dog aggressive. If you intend to work them, bare in mind their skin is VERY thin, it rips very easily. They dont seem to lack drive though, here are a couple from last month.

they may yap out of frustration running on that shitty ground. you will find that they have bin taken out as young dogs and dropped in at the deep-end left to run with the pack to learn whats what. it would be interesting to see if a pup brought up

over here entered right and not run in a pack would give tongue or not while running quarry.different running all-together over here just my opinion.tdb1
