If you have to get him then you can punish him, if he comes to you even if you start to go get him praise him, but for gods sake if he comes to you DONT punish him. I know that its hard not to, lol. As already said, sounds like a typical pup going through its teens, its just a phase but i wouldnt let him get away with anything just because its a phase.

A catapult with acorns or some other not to hard object that will get his attention [bANNED TEXT] he feels it and will know you mean buissnes.

+1 BUT, try to avoid letting the dog see you take aim with the catapult. Clever feckers going through this phase might start to ignore you until they see the catapult come out of your pocket!

a dogs attention span is very short, and when he does come back, and you scold him he won't know why.... hence why he stop's short... for fear of you..

keep it fun keep a few nice treats with you, keep on a long lead if need be to start, and recall, when he comes give him praise and a treat...

do not over do this routine, keep the training times short...

treats should be at hand as soon as he comes to you.. and praise but not to excessive...

the dog will think on recall that treats will flow every time he comes, simples.... just takes time...

Snap.

as above if the dog is stopping short he is seeing agression in you. get down on your knees(on your back if needs be) and in you best squeaky voice praise the hell out of him and give him treats when he sits right next to you.

get him on a long lead and practice recall as with a pup,he should come racing back to you dying to see what you have in your hand this time!!

shooting with a catapult may work for some, for others it will compound the problem.

if he connects the pain with you then its buggered.

when he feels a sharp pain in the rear he may decide the best option is to run for the hills and as you have no controll over him its buggered.

short lessons in the garden(and every where for that matter)of basic obiedience sit etc and recall will soon settle him down again

Like a previous post , just a pup trying it on (dog pups more than bitches) just call the f**ker and walk in the opposite direction, heavily praising it when it comes to you. If it refuses to come , call it and hide( as long as there is no distractions) the dog will panic and look for you.

You know something? I would buy a ticket to watch a bloke do that

... but the advice is spot on. I also find a rousing game of hide and seek with a pup that age does wonders. Duck behind a tree or a big clump of grass and then call him. When they suddenly 'lose' you, they tend to panic and come a-runnin'. Also sometimes just turning around and walking away from them when you call them back does the trick.

During your walks, put him on and off lead at irregular intervals so he doesn't associate coming back to you with the lead and the end of all his fun.

And finally, keep a selection of high value treats in your pocket. I use a variety of things ... a baggy with roast chicken, gravy bones, bits of ham, cheese, cheerios, etc - that way the treat is different every time and he'll want to come back to you to see what's coming out of the magic pocket next  Makes for a stinky pocket, mind you. I've had several people lately suggest little bits of black pudding but I've not tried it myself.

Remember he's 9 months old, so brace yourself for teenage stroppy tantrums. Keep your cool, make you more interesting than anything else, and he'll come good

I have been there with my 13 month old, she would often do what she wanted which included not coming back and if she did she stayed out of reach.

I tried all kinds of food treats hot dogs, sausages, black pudding, cheese, liver cake, left over roast but it seems she is not food orintated at all, we just used to get labs following us everywhere. I tried a rabbit skin but she likes live ones only, a squeeky toy, hiding her lead, hiding from her, running away, shouting :censored::censored: dog, a whistle, praise and coaxing, puppy classes and none of it worked she just came back when and if she wanted too so in the end I got her an air collar.

It is a remote controlled collar that blasts a bit of air under her chin (no pain)when you press a button. Since we got it I have had to use it for recall about a dozen times incluing two attempts on her part to chase deer and it has worked wonders.

She is now 50% on my first "come" command 85% on second usually a whistle and 99% on third which is a stern no! followed with a praising excited come. She is 100% in the end thats why she is fast asleep on the sofa.

9 months is still young and at least he is coming back most of the way, practice at home and in the garden when you can and make it fun.
