adam scott 1
hello, i would lke some advice on snap caps. i occasionally borrow my old mans lanbur because it's light and agile. i dont like storing shotguns with cocked pins, could i possibly use old used shells to fire the pins? or would that still knacker the pins eventually? wakey87 2
I wouldn't worry bout it, but if you havta dry fire I dont recomend using spent cartridges. the firing pin will eventualy peirce the primer and that could cause you to be unable to open the gun in a SS or OU [edit] or atleast cause damage to the firing pins. adam scott 1
what do you recomend? brass or plastic? Quote Link to post
Geoff.C 0
what do you recomend? brass or plastic? For very long life, then brass is best. I have some brass, but the clear and red plastic type are cheap as chips and seem to last well. I have some cheapies in 12 bore and .410, been doing good service for a couple of years. Also, if you leave them in when your gun is in for service, and they lose them, or you manage to eject one into the hedge bottom, then you haven't lost much. Quote Link to post

HUnter_zero 58
Snap caps are easy to make. Pop the primer out of the cartridge and fill the hole with hot melt glue or even glue a pencil rubber in place. You can make them for both shotgun and rifles! John Quote Link to post

HUnter_zero 58
genius! would cilicone do the job? only askin cuz i got a tube if it in the van. I think silicone would be a little soft. I've used hot melt glue in my CF cases and shotgun cases. Works well. John Quote Link to post
danebrewer10 6
you could use old shells but that rather defeats the object of doing it, the firing pins will still be resting on the back of the primer and not fully relaxed- that is why snap caps have a spring in them so that the firing pin can depress the spring and the firing pin spring is at it's full extent. though this may not be true for some types of gun- I'm sure SAGE will pick me up on it. Deker 3,478
Perhaps their is a dubious requirement for snap caps at all these days with modern metals for bolts/pins/springs. I have some but seldom bother in the shotguns and never in the rifles. Perhaps more use in older guns! Although, I suspect they will do little harm if you want to use them, except a rather expensive set of stainless ones a had that somehow got caught in the ejectors, I think because they were machined a little too small. Get the plastic if you must, less likelyhood of doing any damage...and cheaper! Quote Link to post

NOOOO! ster wellclear of plastic! they are absolutely rubbish!- I had some for a while and one of them cracked the clear casing within a couple of months of use so I bought a set of aluminium ones- a good compromise IMO cheaper then brass ot stainless but much more durable than plastic... as for my HMR- as I can de-cock it, and I'd be surprised if you couldn't with other CF rifles, there's no need for snap caps....
