one from tonight

Recommended Posts

out tonight on one of my permissions local to me looking for a buck that i'd seen a few weeks ago. i got settled on a bank looking down into a pasture that borders the strip of woodland he frequents, with the wind in my favour i thought i had chosen the right spot as i'd seen him using the bottom end of the field nearest to me.......wrong. after about 20 minutes i saw two deer leave the other end of the wood and on glassing them saw one was the buck i was after with a doe in attendance. i hoped they would feed down my way and as i kept an eye on them i noticed he was now clean but his head was uneven. they gradually fed toward the far fenceline and jumped over onto a wheat drilling and moved out off site, but i knew where they were going........ there is a big area of marsh at the bottom end of the drilling that contains good roe fodder, when the meadowsweet and marsh buttercup get growing its a haven for many deer all summer but they can be bad to spot in the dense cover. i covered the dead ground quickly and made for a gate that i was sure i could intercept him from but when i got there and spied i just caught the haunch of the trailing deer moving out of site behind the bank that runs down to the marsh.....sh!t they had covered the ground fast :wallbash: as i was unsighted to them again i quickly moved down the field where the bank drops away to the point where they cross the fence and sat down on the hill rifle on sticks and waited. the doe crossed the fence first quickly followed by the buck, she eyed me nervously between mouthfuls but didn't seem to pick me up as a threat, i waited until he turned broadside at around 120 yds and took up pressure on the trigger of the .223 settling the crosshairs on a high heart/lung shot and squeezed, at the strike he reared up and fell over backwards dead on the spot, i reloaded watching him and let the doe move away out of sight before heading down for the gralloch.
