next time you shoot a vixen and your not sure if any cubs left in the earth, dig a small pit and throw her into the bottom and leave along,go back next morning and the cubs will be all sat in the bottom with her

I've herd this one before mate but honestly thought it was one of those urban myths. Have you seen it work yourself as I'm very curious to know if it works.

It's a good while ago I had heard that, it had slipped my mind in the mean time.

Perhaps another approach would be to ask "Why were they shot?"

Friend of my regular shooting buddy has sheep in a very rough, very open farm. He has had lamb losses well into the double figures. We went out Thursday night spent from 10.30pm to 2.30am there. Shot those five, saw fifteen in total.

Now, if you shoot the vixen, and the cubs come out and stay beside her, do you let them fend for themselves, or give them a quick clean end.

People assume too much about other peoples reasons for being out.

....don't really understand your point ! It is pest control not a sport so why does it matter whether you shoot or gas em? In my opinion shooting them is more humane.

Has anybody HONESTLY seen any cubs above ground yet, had a look out with the .22 tonight for some ferret grub, was driving up to where i know theres cubs, as i drive towards it i saw the vixen about to go hunting but she saw me and ran back to the earth, i waited to see if she would bring the cubs out, 10 min went by and 3 crows started dive bombing something further in the field so had look in scope and see the dog fox trotting back to the earth, would he have another vixen somewhere else aswell? i gave him a squeek and he came trotting, then stopped out side the earth and sat there, for about 30 seconds i was watching him through the scope at no further than 50 yards, shall i shant i, i decided not to, if i had the .223 might have been a different story but he's there for another time, fattning those cubs up for a few nights sport

Do you call shooting very young cubs, playing on a earth sport?

If somethings a problem and its legal to control using a certain method go for it....if its not a problem I'd leave them. What I will say is theres a lot of people with blinkers on when it comes to controlling animals, they want to take a good look at there own methods, before they criticize other peoples...

Very true.

This whole "rifle men a are scum, terriers are the only way" pish really twists my melons.

if the fox is causing damage on a sheep farm then "all methods" should be used to remove the vixen and cubs,no brainer.

the man used his prefered method(lamp and rifle) by which he has shot a lot of foxes judging by his threads(which he takes the time and effort to report on,making a good read and some great pics).

the thread was started to ask if and when are cubs above ground, not asking about the ethics of fox controll(fox controll and not the houndsmen, terriermens "sport").the are a pest on some farms and MUST be removed.

how many of the "leave them time to breed" or "spoil the sport for winter" faction work land for farmers with livestock that are taken by foxes? how many of those can justify to the land owner leaving the predators untill winter to controll them "properly"??

this narrow minded and over opionated cack spoils threads on a regular basis.

If you ever had a cub in a pheasant release pen you'd kill them on sight without question. It's pest control pure and simple. I never pass up the opportunity and if you reared game you wouldn't either.

thats correct but doesnt always work if the vixen is too near to the earth thats where they will go best to drag her out into the field.
