FightTheBan 1,147
Just a quick poll to see how many shooters on here shoot brown hares, whether out intentionally for them or just as and when you see them. I personally have never shot one as I dont see any need to and i would not gain any pleasure from doing so. What is your reason for doing so - to controll numbers, for sport, for food or for something to shoot? This is NOT a shite flinging contest and we all know coursing is Illegal it is just a simple poll to gain a perspective of peoples opinions. Any fuckwit comments will be reported and the plug pulled. Born Hunter 17,783
I have shot the very occasional hare in the past and if i cant get hold of one then i will possibly shoot one during the season just for the meat. But i havnt had to do this in a few years now. So i voted no, i guess you could say i do shoot hares but thats what i feel is the most honest answer. If the case for shooting hares for pest control arose i wouldnt be against it however its not something i would take much pleasure in. And im yet to be put in a situation where the hare numbers really justify being culled. Quote Link to post
SNAP SHOT 194
Shot the very odd one years ago, but they are plentyful here, And believe it or not they were for the pot... an ol boy used to cook them in their own blood..... Snap. Quote Link to post
rowey 1
Like to see them about but we keep them down to minimal numbers to keep the pikeys off with the running dogs. Partridge won't tolerate dogs running all over the shoot. That's the sole reason. Quote Link to post
nod 285
The only time i shoot them is when i am asked to in my job as a pest controller, and that has been on one farm only, he had just planted 5 acre of blue berries and about 90 acre of asparagus, the rabbits and hares where ripping through them very quickly, last year i shot over 200 rabbits and 70 hares of these fields, there are still plenty about this year but they aint on the fields where these crops are so i aint touching them Quote Link to post
Dakaras 3
Voted no though when I lived in Lincs we ahd plenty about and used to take the odd one on a walked up day for the pot. Dont have that many here in south oxon so I dont bother them. Quote Link to post
dave1372 83
I have shot a few hare for the pot in the past and no doubt will again in the future so I guess I had to vote yes. To put it in perspective I will shoot maybe four in a year and not in a fashion to damage their population where I shoot them. Quote Link to post
Foxgun Tom 75
Unfortunately I had to shoot them as well while protecting young forestry plantations it was either that or lose my permission I've never shot them on any other land Tom Edited April 21, 2010 by Foxgun Tom Quote Link to post
FightTheBan 1,147
Good to see guys showing some respect for the great animals they are! Would be idiotic to say none should be shot, as in some places (new plantations, valuable crops) etc they can cause huge damage. Was just wanting to see if people thaught of them the same way I do, or 'theres one' whilst out lamping.# All the best FTB Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
I never see any around my way, it is invites on others people land where I find them, I have shot far less of them than I have deer, people just don't understand!! Quote Link to post
JohnGalway 1,043
I voted no. Though I have shot two hares in the past, both were in error. I may shoot some for the pot at some point in the future. Quote Link to post
waidmann 105
i have voted yes as we used to do driven/walked up days for pheasant and hare. i will shoot them for the pot but at a reasonable time of year and only when needed/wanted(probably about ten a year).its not sport to shoot a hare imho(with the rifle) its harvesting.shooting hare with the shotgun can be fun but mostly not as challenging as a rabbit and nobody wants a hare full of shot. headshot for the pot so yes i shoot hares. waidmann Quote Link to post
Hoolit 2
I voted no ,I think the last brownhare I shot was probably 25 years ago ,though I have only seen about 4 or 5 on the shootin the last couple of years . Quote Link to post
black lab 3
I dont like shooting them, but they do alot of tree damage in some of the plantations i shoot on and i am there to protect the tree's and some of them are only protected with vole tubes and the tree's are only 18" high, so they do get shot and i dont like doing it, it's a job. On my other ground's farms ect i do not shoot them, but they get chased all the time with the doggie boy's Wullie. Quote Link to post

Cheers FTB I do the pest control over a 6 thousand acre estate here in Somerset i see lots of hares sometimes as many 30 in an evening you will find here in my area most of the farmers like to see them around, which i think is a good thing.
