Lee85 44
Any tips on this, maybe i'm being impatient? i've had my trap set up in a good location where I know theres magpies since Sunday, i've got a plastic decoy bird in the living compartment (magpie one) and in the two trap areas I have bread & two real birds nests with chicken eggs in them (nests that the magpies actually raided and killed the occupants) Any ideas? Not sure if this is the correct section? Thanks

Lee85 44
Right good, i'm going to check it this evening and i'll give that a try! cheers!
klashnekoff 3
Make a fake nest in one of the catching compartments, Maybe smash a few eggs with the yolk and shell showing on top and around the trap, Youll find this works the best. Once youve got your call bird, Remember to keep swapping them around, This is how i used to work mine.

I'm currently using that set up with real birds nests and cracked eggs - personally I thought that would be good aswell but not as yet mate. maybe there just not used to the trap yet? i bought some takeaway trays and some dog biscuits today, going to try that for tonight

Ive found the eggs and nest to be more usefull on a hedgerow, As this time of year magpies are hunting up and down hedgerows looking for birds nests. Ive been running larsons for the past five or six years, From Aprill right through to mid july. And always caught very quickly using the egg and nest method. Quite often ive had captures the morning after setting the trap.
Lee85 44
Right it's not near hedgerows but between two small trees, i think i'll move it then, thanks for the advice
timbo2 8
Hi Lee, i would take away the plastic magpie. If anything i think it would scare them off. You could do with finding someone in your area that will give you a call bird. The eggs are a good idea. Hope you have some luck.
Lee85 44
yeah maybe, my thinking behind they plastic decoy was that when I use it only and i'm setting up to decoy it's seems to bring them down?

Lee85 44
Here's on for you - been and checked the trap tonight, just got back - All the dog biscuits have gone (15 in each silver tray in each compartment) - and the traps haven't sprung! - no mice droppings and not a crum left! theres no way anyone would have seen us and is winding us up and also the biscuits we used were 'morsels' so i highly doubt a smaller bird could take them and leave no crums - also the trays haven't been tipped up to suggest mice/rats? very strange, wev'e re-baited tonight and put some really thin sticks threw crisscrossed just above the split perches so a magpie would have to knock the perch if it was jumping down the gap, very stange!!
