neil cooney 10,416
Try keeping poultry where there's Pine Martins near by. Rumour has it Coillte or Duchas (the forestry or wildlife crowd) is releasing them to control the grey squirrell population. They have certainly spread quickly. I picked up a dead one on the edge of Navan town and a friend seen one in Mullingar. A friend of a friend thought he had trapped 3 mink in a week trying to get at his fowl. They were pine martins. A few years ago it was said that Co. Clare was the last stronghold of them, now they're everywhere. Quote Link to post

patdahat 41
well it's the first time iv ever seen 1 myself, i know they were released in the national park some years back but that is over 30 miles away, sence this fella was caught we've heard that clare and galway is thick with them and was told that a game keeper in galway had 3 of them in his phesant pen with serious carnage done. Good if they hunt the grey squirrel but will they kill the red aswell?? Quote Link to post

waidmann 105
did it have a white or gold "bib" bud? (stone or pine martin) they are beutifull creatures and so agile its unreal(they make the mustelids look like sloths). waidmann Don't you mean: "They make the other mustelids look like sloths?" Not being a smart arse, I'm currently half way through reading a book about the evolution of the carnivores! i may have read a different book i refer to "mustelids" as the family mustela (nivalis, erminea, vison, putorius) and would not include the other species martes martes and martes foina(known in germany as the royal/real martins,as opposed to the stink martins above). lutra and meles being the only others i can think of would also not be included in the mustelid family. as i would see it the mustelid refers to the species and sas such only when mustela is in the first part of the biological/zoological name can it be a mustelid? i may be wrong and would love to find out so thanks for picking it up if i'm wrong waidmann Quote Link to post

Going on my book.... They are all in the Mustelidae family, but and as you say the weasels/polecats/stoats/etc are in a different subfamily (Mustella) to the Martins/Sable, & fisher. Marten(Martes). So the term Mustelid could be used as a (very) broad term for any member of the family from the wolverine to the least weasel. :clapper: :clapper: :clapper: Great book isn't it Fantastic!
