adamb20 22
Ihave only ever known and seen collie/whip/greys working at what they are best at, rabbits on the lamp. I hear of people reminising about how there collie X used to kill hares in there hundreds over a season and the big flat land. No disrespect here to anyone but they are dreams. I am not saying to kill the odd hare here and there but to just go out strictly hare coursing with a collie/whippet/Greyhound on fenland. Getting back to the topic seriously, My nephew has a good bitch always ko`ing 2/3 3/3 in the dead of winter and she is just 23" tts its quite clear, you have not seen a good collie x work, A wee bitch called Tinker 23" Red Fawn, could Hunt a field off the road, and carry back up into the van or car, she killed Hares, all over this country, another one of mine, bred from a first x collie bitch, to a 3/4 Grey 1/4 collie, could murder a Hare, speed, brain, and Stamina, coursing time no more than 1 and half minutes, the Saluki x was a very poor, dog in the 70s but with selective breeding, they have come to the top, but DO not under estimate a good collie x Got a pup of this exact breeding, five and half month, 22 tts and 40 lb. Hope she turns out as good. Quote Link to post
poacherman 353
it seems like that if your dog dont run fen hares then other coursed hares are classed in the same league as rabbits is a fen rabbit then harder than catching a hare in a different location? seems to be all nonsese to me. anyway great to hear from other folk that have small dogs that could catch hares pre-ban as it not the size of the dog but the size of the heart that the dogs possess ps have not killed that many but the bro,s dog who is only 22" has killed 18 hares this season. a would say its harder up in scotland to catch hares. the fens is all opened up where as up in scotland there fences, hedgerows enbankments ect. dogs need to be quick at them to keep them in the park and keep tight on them for the full course where as in the fens they can loss them on the turn and still have a lot of ground to catch up on them. a man from my area had a lurcher at 23 inches and was deadly on the hares atb poacher Edited April 22, 2010 by poacherman Quote Link to post

berty1 8
How many people were running collie x dogs strictly for hares prior to the ban or where the ban isnt in force this day and age. (i.e Ireland) I dont mean take the odd hare but just take mainly/only hares? Quote Link to post
