28" vs 30" Barrel Length

Hi Guys,

 

Can anyone help me with a quick question. Why are taller shooters recommended or at least I have been a 30" barrel as opposed to a 28"?

if its for a hunting rifle i'd suggest its very long at 28 or 30 inches...

 

if target, then 30 inches

 

varminting gun 28 would be fine.

I'm 6ft4" and looking for a shotgun to go clay shooting and maybe some pigeon in the future.

Longer barrel ,straight energy shot (in theory) I am 113kg tall ,i no need 6 bore bore ,in stead of 12 bore gun

I'm 6' 2" and started out with a 30" 682 sporter and was always told that (30" sporter) was an ideal alrounder for someone my height. I ended up chopping it in for a 28" game silver pigeon as I shoot a lot more feathers/fur than clays and I'm chuffed to bits with it.

 

I would say that 30/32" is better for general clays trap and DTL stuff but for sporting clays and game shooting the faster swing of a 28 is better suited - thats how it's worked for me anyhow. The lighter weight of a game gun helps when you're carrying it for most of the day too - I wouldn't say I notice any greater recoil for the lighter weight either. My silver pigeon 28" gets used for everything - pheasants in the winter, clays & pigeons in the summer as well as lamping rabbits and foxes (I use 36g BB's for foxes and again, the recoil is not that bad at all).

It's a generalisation born out of size and balance, 28 or 30 should do you fine, few will notice the difference until they get to Olympic standard, hold both and buy what feels best for you!

just personal preferance mate, i shoot a 32" as i find it suits me, 28", 30" or 32" if you like it and it suits you then thats the one for you, by the way im 5' 11"

the gun should match the man as far as possible,a small man should obviously not have a gun with extra long barrels,they will easily pick up snow and mud and he will find them unwieldy,conversely a large man should not have a gun with short barrels,they will tend to look and feel un-balanced
