Hi, I always use a mix of ferret food, as you never know when a brand might run out or you can't get to the specific store for it. I mix bags of either Vitalin - which you can buy on line quite cheap, or the EquineCanineFeline website is quite good for ferret food, I get a couple of different bags, then mix with a high quality kitten dry kibble, my lot have squirty bums if I use Chudley's but it's just down to the individual ferret. We also have a local pet store who buy in James Wellbeloved, so we just buy a bit here and there, as long as it's not in a fancy bag we get it quite cheap.

I have 18 ferrets at the moment, so by mixing the kitten food and good quality ferret food, it seems to go a long way, and the ferrets are quite happy, as when I just fed them one particular brand - some liked it and others didn't so it was a chore remembering who would eat and who wouldn't.

its good to see someone asking "before" rather than after, of course if your going to be using the ferret for rabbiting, then most of the time you'll feed them the best food going, ie fresh rabbit, get yourself a small chest freezer to keep in the shed, mine fits around 55 rabbits in it, remove feet and head before freezing and you'll get more in, put layers of carrier bags in, to stop them freezing and sticking together

but of course there will be times that dry food is all thats available, although a trip to the supermarket and you can buy chicken legs/wings quite cheap,

but buy whatever dry food is available to you, its no good asking whats the best, if you cant buy it where you live, only you can tell wether your ferret looks well, from what its eating, and only you can provide it what it needs

Why would you feed dry grub to a ferret they have big teeth because there carnivores IE they eat meat

I always find it amusing when I read posts about saying that "jills must be taken out of season" when they come into heat and folk are told not to listen to owners that "clearly dont care about the welfare of their jills".

Yet on another thread they're quite happy to advocate the feeding of dry food, when as everyone knows meat is best.yes.gif

Aye these folk's that feed dry to there ferrets how would they like a bowl of Alpine for breaky a bowl of special k for lunch and a bowl of frosties for tea and see how bloody long they like /want to eat cereal ???

Mine get plenty of rabbit, always with the heads left on, this is the first to go.

I do suppliment with chudleys ferret jock during breeding. With some of my jills i find the chudleys goes before the fresh rabbit.

When feeding a complete dry food your ferrets will drink more water.

Mine also get alot of table scraps, they eat pretty much anything except moles!!

I think a varied diet is a winner.Including fresh duck eggs.

I have a jill that I took in from an old boy thats grand kid got bored with, that wont eat rabbit no matter what, she only eats dry, dont know why :)

mine have always eaten fresh meat but now they wont touch it. would sooner eat dry food, ive chucked them allsorts in, pheasant, rabbit, pidgeon, liver, heart, u name it. dont know if its cos there in season or not?

Mine have dry food, 2 or 3 brands so its abit more varied. But they also have meat on a

night, the odd egg, lacto-free milk & liver every so often.

Mine would also much rather eat dry than meat too sometimes.

Mine get a variety. That does include biscuits (Alpha) - but they are more than happy to eat them so I don't feel bad about it.

When it comes to meat I much prefer to give whole carcasses as they get the natural balance of things. Obviously meat is more natural than biscuits, but just feeding diced rabbit may not be ideal as there's no "crunch" to keep their teeth healthy. Also the warm climate down here means flies would be a real problem if feeding meat in the summer months.

So mine get just biscuits in June, July, August & September (as a general rule).

Then the other 8 months they get a variety of biscuits, whole rabbits (just gutted), whole pheasant, pigeon, etc. (I dont gut the birds).

You asked about complete ferret foods. I use Alpha ferret kibbles which I find very good for mine. I have 2 adult hobs at present and when on biscuits they get 30g each per day and plenty of fresh water.

I never ever thought I'd see the day when I heard someone say they're ferret will not eat meat.no.gif

Its a fact, this is the only ferret I have ever owned that wont eat meat of any disctiption, I left her for a week once without dry and just fed rabbits, pigeons, and even tried chicken breasts, but she wont eat it, the weight just dropped off her, dont know if it was something the dickhead that I took her from did or what. The hob that came with her will eat any kind of meat, so she has dry, and the others eat meat :)
