dog for allround general work

Recommended Posts

anyone got any ideas about which dogs are best for all round work.

not serious earth dog but a bit of earth work bit of ratting etc. not looking to buy just yet, but just trying to know more bout it before i get one.

i heard fair bit bout pattserdales that you can only dig em once every 2 weeks (headbangers) but also heard there are some which are a bit calmer and settled

borders seem to be quite steady but are quite costy for a first dog and 400/500 a lot to spend if it takes a bit of a hiding like.

mixed views on russells, too many are kept as pets but i have seen them work well and they look quite promising, like a nice stamp good strong type??

any suggestions guys

My advice would be to work backwards, so to speak.

Get yourself a well bred working (digging) dog pup, of whatever breeding/type you want, then you'll greaten the chances of it doing that type of graft and then work backwards with ratting etc.

Not a working terrier bred that won't make a ratter but finding a decent earth dog, one that you could work in that way, when digs are few and far between is a bit more difficult.

Plus you won't know how the work you give it may change over time, you may find you enjoy digging more than you think, especially if you drop on decent permission, better to have a dog you can dig with over the forthcoming years and by then it should be a well seasoned ratter also. ;)

thanks guys this advice is really helpful, in my current situation im nt able to get a dog just yet and i dont beleive in just getting one for the sake of it, as i wont do it justice and give it the works it needs and wants but i wanted to look bit more before getting one.

weve already told what to do dog wise

you want a RUSSEL it seems as you keep asking about them if you want one thers nothing wrong with it youve just been given advice of people who own black dogs and imo every one will try and big up the breed which they own and work. at the end of the day its gunna be your terrier you will have to keep it so thers no point in getting a dog that some one tells you to and regret it for the rest of his life if he dosent work if hes too hard too soft youll be thinking shouldve got what i wanted. look at the work you want to do then get a terrier suited to that if u want lots of quick easy bolts and a dog to use week in week out russels would be best if you can find a decent one, if u want to do a lot of digging get a black dog its horses for courses and u know what you want to do so get the dog thatl do the job just steer clear of lakeies they look smart but the good stuff dosent come round very often and youll end up with shit
