Yeah, the big mac is responsible for giving us a whole generation of fat b*****ds eh? Well it's played it's part and so has glamorising this stupid American ghetto gangster/thug image that the kids aspire too these days. I think the last place we need to look is to the Yanks for examples of how to sort our problems out. I agree to a certain extent, especially with regard to the example you've given, but I don't see how we couldn't learn from certain aspects of other country's systems when they get it right. I see a great deal of merit in having elected judges and police chiefs, as an example. If they fail in their duty, they're out on their backside. Simple. Any Chief Constable in this countrt who was seen to be following a political agenda would be out on his ass double quick time. Out two systems are so different that no direct comparison can be made. Ric Political agendas maybe Ric, but what about Richard Brunstrom , former chief constable of the North Wales police force? (AKA the mad mullah of the traffic Taliban!) He waged war on speeding motorists thought his tenure to the detriment of catching real criminals. Now, do you think he'd have lasted nearly a decade in the job if he had to answer to the people he was supposed to be protecting by collaring real criminals instead? Prisons should be a place for being punished and rehabilitation rather than a place where crims can put on weight for theor next crime spree. As for Mr Brunstrom? Well it could definately be described as a political agenda as he was trying, by the easiest way possible, to up his league table ratings. I believe the Tories want to make Chief Constables more accountable to the public. So for all the centralising that labour did re local politics they are now doing a 180! If anything this election is igniting debate as to what exactly politicians stand for.............even if it has highlighted the fact that for years they have been self serving career climbing syncophants who've grown fat from having their snouts too long in the trough at our expense! In my opinion there are a lot of good and bad in most cultures and I am sure we could cherry pick some of the better examples from the US....... lets face it having read how the jails are run in Arizona would you take a chance on being caught dealing drugs or any other crime..... bet you wouldn't.....so how can that be a bad thing! Oh Malt, how I laughed .... :laugh: I tend to agree, the American culture - no direct disrespect to our American members - is quite invasive. Everything there has to be faster/bigger/better/more dramatic. I'm not keen to be honest. And I'm certainly not interested in living in a country where guns are the norm. There were enough of them in the 'hood I grew up in in Toronto ... once you've seen a friend get shot in the head for doing nothing more menacing than sitting outside his building on a sunny day, you sort of get put off a bit. More people carrying guns doesn't level the playing feild: it gives more f*cked up eejits an opportunity to harm people. Bad do's if you ask me. I wouldn't want to live there. The right to carry concealed firearms no permit required. This means that any law abiding citizen of legal age may carry a concealed weapon legally. WOW Erm, and you think that's a GOOD thing?? Just because someone doesn't have a record doesn't make them law abiding. I'm fair certian there's plenty of yokels shouldn't be allowed to play with a pop gun, never mind a real one. Maricopa county is the richest and one of the largest counties in Arizona and today the Head Sheriff Joe Arpio has activated a huge task force to hunt down, aresst , fine and deport all illegal aliens. WOW Both of these legal action are bound to make national if not international news. The actions that Sheriff Joe is taking are very controversial - He is enforcing federal law by arresting the illegal aliens. This angers the liberals...... The aliens are leaving en-mass returning to points south of the border. WOW The shite is hittng the fan here in AZ.... othickman 6 Posted April 19, 2010 Report Share Posted April 19, 2010 I fully understand why the Americans like to be allowed to have guns, I understand why they like to carry them with them, what I don't understand is why the general public want to be able to carry concealed weapons?! Surely, from the point of view of someone who isn't planning on using it, it is a better idea to carry their gun on a hip holster; that way anyone who might consider pulling any shit when they're nearby won't... I personally would hate for the general public to be able to do that in my country, but I see the pros of carrying a gun. BUT to carry it concealed does NOT act as a deterrent against crime it acts as either a way to defend yourself when someone starts letting lead fly or a way to commit crime MUCH easier. Now, you rarely will ever have to defend yourself when in public, so point one is relatively obsolete, which only leaves crime as the only pro of concealed weapons. I'll take this one with much regret, I already know, but....most of our crime stats come from major US cities have very strict gun laws . Many come close to yours in the UK. But guess what ? Crime rates remained high.....why ? Because only law abiding citizens obeyed the gun laws. Than Florida finally came to their senses and became what's called a 'shall issue'state ...meaning if you are legally able to own a firearm than you are essentially guaranteed a CCW permit.And wonders of wonders....the violent crime rate plummeted . Soon , other states followed suit and more violent crime rates dropped....except in cities that still clung to the false answer of disarmament. All that being said, regardless, we have a guaranteed right to be armed. Compromise one and might as well compromise them all. That's what's good for the US. When I worked the street , I literally never had an issue with anybody with a CCW permit. Model citizens.You pull them over for something and the first words out of their mouth " I am a CCW holder and I am carrying", I now know that I am dealing with a law abiding member of society who was driving 65 mph in a 50. "Slow it down some and becareful" and on they went. Also, statistically speaking they almost do not even register when it comes to firearms incidents. 1 Quote Link to post Share on other sites
