Child car seat problems in a Navara

Recommended Posts

Hiya guys,

I know it's probably a bit of a long shot, but thought it would be worth an ask...

With having the baby due soon, I've started looking for a car seat that is compatible with the Navara. I am getting nowhere! Everything we try isn't compatible, moves too much or has buckle crunch.

Part of the problem is that the seat beat 'stems' are quite long, so most baby seats get buckle crunch. I've even been onto Nissan asking if they can shorten the stems!!!

Has anyone any ideas or experience of Navaras and baby seats? Any suggestions on particular seats to try. I've just been this morning and had a Britax First Class Plus tried and it was no good (that is supposed to fit most cars as there are different ways of putting the belt around it).

The Nav is a 2001 model.

Thank you!

Shell

Hi Shell, my wife had similar problems finding a seat for our car which is a Nissan Almera Tino (I'm a non-driver so I just use a mountain buggy :toast: ). I think our baby seat was one from a travel system with a Babies R Us buggy which she bought. We had an even bigger problem finding one to fit when we recently moved up to the next seat size. Like you the problem was the extra long buckle straps. She's out at the moment but when she gets in I'll ask her what make her current one is.

That would be greatly appreciated Neal! Thanks!

I was hoping to get one for 0 - 4 for the Nav, but its looking like I'm going to have to get 2 different ones, one for each stage.

I've got a Graco travel system one with a seperate base that will do to 9 months, and I'm reasonably happy with the way that fits. It's just just the next stage up then that's the problem now.

Thanks guys,

We had a really good car seat/baby stuff/pram shop in town but it's just been taken over by new people who know nothing. I went down this morning and they had 3 car seats in the entire shop and couldn't give me any advise. The spotty 17 year old in Halfords was more use!!!

Thanks again,

Drives you mad doesn't it Jenna!!!

Other people have recommended the Recaro seats, so I'll definately look into having one tested in the car. Be next week before I get chance now though.

Thanks for your advise!

Sorry Shell, I forget to check yesterday evening so I've just popped out to the car now in my dressing gown. :icon_redface:

Ours is a Maxi-Cosi Tobi.

Don't forget that the time to change car seat is determined by the size rather than age of the child. As an example, my son, Oscar, has only just gone up to the second stage of seat within the last couple of months even though he's now nineteen months old. Apparently, it's based on where their head is rather than the legs ie it doesn't matter if their legs seem a bit tucked up as the most important part to protect is the head.

We got ours from Halfords but originally went for a different make as recommended and fitted by the chap there. When we went back one week later with my mother in law to get a new one for her car there was a woman there who re-checked ours and said it wasn't a good enough fit, based on the length of buckle straps as you were saying. Ironically, the car seat that Grandma now has is the same model as our previous, incorrectly fitting one, though obviously it does fit her Kangoo!

We've since had both checked at a kind of "drop in car seat safety check thing" at a local Asda and both were OK.

Thanks for that Neal - the Maxi Cosi Tobi was one the lad at Halfords suggested trying, but they didn't have one in stock to test in the car when I went down. Definately one to look into then!

My daughter was the opposite to your son, in that she was ready to move into the next stage by about 7 months!!!

I've got a couple of options to look into now, so thanks guys for all your help!

Quick update - finally found one.

Lad at Halfords tried the Maxi Cosi Tobi, as recommended by Neal, in and it fitted perfectly. Didn't buy it there and then though, will shop around on the net and get one cheaper than £180 I think!!!

Thanks again guys,

Shell
