Mickey Finn 3,014
im no expert on collie xz in fact im a total novice with this cross! this is the first collie x dog i have owned and up until the end of this season he was hard fast exciting to watch ive had regular good sized mixed bags with him!! i ran him hard all season as it was his second season and after my first with him when he was a year old i really wanted to test him and thats exactly what i did!! around december time his runs changed he started to work the rabbits the minute he was sent, running wide of the beam and pushing them out into the field!! only running when he had to! this was a strange experiance for me as i was used to dogs that just went for it hell for leather!! but as it was working i had no problem with it just took some getting used to !! here comes the worst bit he started to slow up on rabbits that were on the hedgeline and i bollocked him so i tried again and again the same thing happened everytime i was getting angrier the dog was not wanting to return really made the night a horrible experiance for us both!! so i thought this is it season over let him have a good rest through summer and try again next season!! but no i couldnt rest thinking my pride and joy had lost intrest in the thing i thought he loved doing as much as me!! so i tried him again he had just aquired a taste for charlie so i know hes still keen on the lamp its just theses edgline feckers!! anyways ive been talking to lots of dirrent people about this problem ive just encountered and also had lurchermen out with me!! and they feel my voice and mannerism towards my dog now is aggressive and sharp barking orders at him contastantly, this is new and i didnt realise i was doing it!! its frustration towrds the situation with the dog causing a big rift in our working relationship hes unhappy im unhappy makes for a bad mix when your out ment to be working in harmony together( basically were no longer friends) !! so im taking drastic action lol!!letting him be a dog play over the park go to the beach splash in rivers even playfighting to build up my bond with my dog again(no hunting)!! i belive now and i trust the opinion that have been given to me that i have got to get a strong bond back with my dog and my old tone of voice back so that he can enjoy it again like he used to!! like i said he was run very hard this season and i could have pushed him a bit to far!! i think they can sense our moods and it can affect there performance!! i'll let you know if i rectify this mistake i belive now that i made and fingers crossed i can sort it!! he was unbelivable starting the season almost through to the end and i dont think it fair i give up on him without trying to mend what i caused!! Very insightful. That bond is precious and deserves nurturing. Excellent post! Best of luck next season. Quote Link to post
adamb20 22
a good thing about my colie coss is if there is a rabbit to one side of the field she will push them away from the fence where other dogs would chase through the fence, i have noticed this alot and i prefer the way a collie works, cutting game off etc. i do like to watch bull crosses etc work it is mpressive the amount of determination they have but i know im not resonsible for the vet bills. most experienced dogs do this some just try that bit more,i think you need to get out wid a few more experienced lads wid DIFFERENT CROSSES then you maybe would'nt be so kennel and breed blind Yeah I know loads of dogs will I was just saying that I've only seen mine do it.
