No whin their working dogs to me but also good type of dogs to have as companions and would never condem any one for keeping one as a pet and a companion as a lot that are kept as pets get a better de

The beauty of a lurcher to me is its,Fluidity,It is a customized dog.If you like a breed of dog for what ever reason,even if in its pure state it would not suit you or your hunting country .It can be breed in to your lurcher,to the desired %.That X might not suit any one eles but then all a lurcher has to do is please its owner.

Well here is my thinking on the lurcher,when we have all finished,The" my dogs better than yours,I hunt more than you",BULL S**T!!

I get what your saying,but a lurcher that is only shown or pet is still a lurcher,But a lad who works his dogs would always class it has second rate to his hard working mutts.

charti ive had deerhoundy types , collie types still got them ,never had a terrier type, as in bred one or bought one as a pup,to me there should never be one type but they should be functional and do the work required as there no yard stick if they are not functional working dogs

I bought one in ; she is Beddy/Grey x Deer/Grey-Whippet/Grey, possibly the best allrounder I've had;

Theres as many different ideas of what a lurcher is, how and what it should work and what standard it should work at as there are lurchermen. From premier league dogs to the canine equivalent of the sunday pub league...thats what keeps it so interesting!

my reasoning is a lurcher is a hunting dog thats a cross breed between a sighthound/running dog crossed with another working non sighthound breed,

but then its also just as easy to lump sighthound crosses like saluki x greyhound as a lurcher too as not many use longdog terms anymore.

When I was in the UK, I hunted the rabbit mostly, and was very fond of deer, but they where legal then! When I moved to the desert south west of America, I hunted the hare more than anything. Got my first Yank bred dog when I was there,...chased rabbits and hares, the small Gray Fox, coyotes, infact anything, even had a few wild/feral dogs with him. Moved to "middle-america" and here in the mid-west, my main quarry is the raccoon, a animal that is much slower than the Hare, but is much tougher to finish than a Red Fox!...the ground is frozen, it can be -15F with windchill, and the same dog that I done 2-3 daytime hares with, single handed in the desert! The same dog has hunted bigger faster game, and taken Coyotes,...I've also used him to retreave doves shot off phone lines, ducks from ponds, he is great at treeing squirrels, so you can shoot them witth the rifle,..he has blood tracked Elk in Arizona, marked fox to ground for terriers, and been used at the end of digs. I think a good Lurcher is a natural hunter of anything/everything, and will change/adapt to each game being pursued!..funnily enough, this dog is NOT a Lurcher, but a Staghound. Easily, one of the most versatile dogs I've seen.

Kye..

that dog is just like the first lurcher i ever owned, a proper exchange and mart dog ,with the old HJKC trade mark advertizment. going by the stag and greyhound . which meant that it had everthing in its viens and had a bit of jacket but useful is as useful does it was a good dog to cut my teeth into the lurcher world.
