The "Lurcher"

Recommended Posts

We all have our own opinion of what a "Lurcher" is; but what is it exactly..... A Beddy x Whippet is a Lurcher, as is a Wolfhound x Greyhound, ( OK, thats a "longdog", if you want to be pedantic), but you can see what I mean ! !7" to 34"; they're still Lurchers !! The Saluki Hybrid is now probably a seperate breed, they have been bred for one thing, and excell at it! Should they still be called "Lurchers" ? A rabbiting/ferreting dog isn't the same as a big dog bred for deer, I'm talking pre ban, of course, but should they all be called "Lurchers" ? The Terrier world has everything from the Yorkie to the Pit Bull. so I suppose it's the same question, "What is a Lurcher"

Cheers.

No whin their working dogs to me but also good type of dogs to have as companions and would never condem any one for keeping one as a pet and a companion as a lot that are kept as pets get a better de

in this day in age it seems anything crossed with a greyhound. people are trying everything. you rarely see the old type lurcher anymore.

To expand on my post, what would you class as the "old lurcher type" ? Not having a go mate, just trying to get a decent post about Lurchers going !

Cheers.

i believe that any terrier breed or herding breeds that are crossed with a greyhound are lurchers where as greyhound crossed with whippets, salukis, deerhound, borzois basicaly any other purpose bred running dog are long dogs atb biza

I agree entirely, but I have a classic bred "Longdog" and "Lurcher", and to anyone looking at them, they look the same "breed" !

What is a Lurcher...........................A sighthound cross that is bred to do a job and he should be capable of doing it if asked to!

Interesting post Chartpolski, my reconing would be a purpose bred hybrid with a foundation of either Greyhound, Whippet or similar running hound, it's uses in the hunting field are far ranging, dependent of what crosses are used.

Anything that would fall into this category would be deemed 'a Lurcher', if it looks and hunts like a Lurcher then it is a Lurcher!.

Giving any hybrids a differing name just because they breed true to type would be a travesty, in my eyes.

Though I suppose Mr Breay and Mr Buck thought the same when people started calling their black Fell terriers 'Patterdales'!!! ;)

For once, I'm not giving MY opinion, just asking others opinions; and I value yours. Isn't this what a forum should be about ?
