The 100 yard humane kill experiment (Mith Bust)

Hi guys,

I decided to go out today with the .22 calibre Pro Sport to try and “Myth Bust” the so called 100 yard humane shot on a rabbit :hmm: .

After watching various clips on YouTube I was interested to see what sort of groups I would be able to get at this range plus pellet penetration.

To complete this experiment I used a plastic dummy target, can of Red Bull and a card target to see what type of group i would get

No live quarry was used  .

After doing the experiment and seeing the results myself first hand I am pretty sure in my mind that a kill on a rabbit could be achieved at 100 yards with a 12 FP rifle but only maybe once in every 5 – 10 shots taken  .

The other shots will either miss the quarry completely or be a WOUNDING SHOT causing distress and a slow death

All this said it is not the sort of percent, 1 in 5 to 10 shots being taken being a humane shot we look for as responsible air rifle hunters in regards to ensuring that the animals we shoot get a quick and humane death with no suffering  .

I would not personally ever try to make this kind of shot with only 12 FP of power on any live animal as there is far too many considerations to take into consideration before taking the shot.

These considerations are the same as for shooting at closer ranges but much more amplified due to the extreme range at 100 yards. These are wind direction and wind speed and point of aim on your scope reticule and the magnification of your scope.

Remember that the higher the magnification on your scope the less range you will get on your reticule in regards to mil dots, so a low mag is needed, hence me using my lowest setting of x6 which isnt very good at all :censored: .

As far as I am concerned this MYTH has been proper BUSTED and I am sure that the lads that claim a good success rate at 100 yards on live quarry with a 12 FP air rifle are only trying to kidd themselves and are only really getting 1 rabbit in every 5 to 10 on camera humanely shot, the other 4 or 9 are not shown due to being inhumane

On a better and more positive note for me, I was very pleased with how the Pro Sport performed at 100 yards and the group I managed to shoot in a slight breeze.

This group size I only really appreciated after I walked down to the target and peeled it off the front of the card as 2 of the shots were low and at the bottom of the card and hidden by the grass and low mag camera not being clear, but can be seen on the video if you look at the bottom of the card closely and see the grass and leaves move and 1 shot wasnt seen on camera at all due to the stiff card behind the target and camera low zoom and it being on the vertical black line of the target until i peeled it off the card making the hole twice its original size.

SORRY LADS I HAVE REMOVED THE VIDEO CLIP AFTER RECEIVING COMPLAINS VIA PM ON YOUTUBE

THESE COMPLAINTS COME FROM PEOPLE WHO INSIST THAT THEY GET REGULAR 100 YARD 12 FP AIR RIFLE KILLS ON RABBITS.

I AND ALSO IM A KNOB APPARENTLY LOL.

Hi Shay,

I come over to the UK tomorrow mate, but only for a military exercise for 3 weeks nothing more, so will be off the forum for a while :censored:

I will be down in Larkhill Salisbury playing war and soldiers again LOL.

Cant wait "NOT".

Its going to kill me seeing all those bunnies on Salisbury Plain just running around having fun and munching grass when i havent got my air rifle with me :wallbash:

Just chrono-ing the Falcon and finding a better heavier pellet that suits your barrel will boost your power up mate to around 11.8 FP.

Id think of trying the AA Fields, FX 16 grains or Bisley Magnums in her pal to see how they run.

Hiya Zini.

Another great video, well made and interesting.

Most sub 12ftlb hunters know that there are far too many variables to attempt a humane kill at 100yds , be it spring or pre charged rifles that they use, and hopfully most would not even consider it.

As you rightly say, a Marksman would have problems achieving a 1 inch group on a regular basiss, especialy in FIELD conditions, and using the average kit we shoot with.

Even on an indoor range, with tuned competition grade kit, it would take some doing to repeat it with effect.

In the field, add weather conditions, temprature, humidity etc and the odds drop a little more, then there's the human element too.

There is just far too much against the practicalities, or indeed the ethics of taking a shot at that distance on live quarry.

I dont think I would personaly take a shot on a Rabbit past the 50 yd mark, and then it would have to present a good target in near perfect conditions, I consider 50yd as my absolute limit.

Better to apply practiced field craft, and get to know your ground, and the habbits of the quarry, than try to extend your hunting range.

Thats some good points there Bill buddy

I agree with you 100% pal.

Most lads that come on this site and section less for the newer members and new to air rifle hunting would know most of this, but i just wanted to put the Myth to bed once and for all in field conditions for myself.

It was done more out of interest really plus i was really bored sat at home while on leave.

Regarding 50 yards, that is a great shot to make with a air rifle buddy

Hi Shay,

Im over again for 4 weeks at the start of July while on a course in the UK, but i have the weekends free to shoot if i get a invite buddy :whistling:

I also am coming over with my Russian and best mate Sergej in August for a week shooting and digging with the terriers.

He is a NOOB to hunting with a air rifle and as only done it once before with me and loved it.

He also shot me by mistake in the top of my arm and the pellet is still at the base of my neck :wallbash: It was more a richochet that a direct shot though and was more my fault for trying to stand too close to the target and be clever

I took him to a dray and we got 12 squizzers out of it in about 30 minutes by sticking a large metal pole into the dray and upsetting the squizzers inside 8)

I just need to try and get some areas to shoot with him when im over, but i will be with my cousin and his terriers so there is always that area worst case.Si

Hiya Si.

Just read my post again.....and it doe's sound like im preaching to the masses :icon_redface::doh: it was not intended that way everyone  , I got carried away :icon_redface::D

What I was trying to do was reinforce your finding's in the field Si ( Not that I need too )

It was a good example, and came accross well.....you have put the MIFF to bed mate :D

I did forget to say, excellent shooting with the Pro Sport Si, 3" group in field conditions very impressive Marksmanship ( I hate you :tongue2::D ):thumbs:

Here is a diagram using my Pro Sport ballistic profile of where i was aiming on the reticule both with the wind coming right to left and left to right.

The wind was around 5 metres per second so not that strong but strong enough to make a difference to my POI at 100 yards.

As they say a picture paints a 1000 words
