runt of the litter

Recommended Posts

hello just wondered what your opinions are on the runt of the litter.does any one work one or has worked one before?would you have the runt and do you think it matters or not?my mate works one and shes a good worker, just wonderd what your thoughts are?

all the best mexlad

Mexlad............hows it going?

Took a dog pup on 6 months old now.

Got it early at only 5 weeks and it looked

as though it wasnt going to make it.

Should see it now.

its not the biggest now but as strong

as any of his siblings.

I would have no worries taking on a "runt"

If you take to the dog......its only got to please you.

the way i see it is.. the weak pups in the litter die, end of..the smallest pup in the litter is the runt.ive seen runts make the grade as good workers and in my experience the runt usually turn out to be roughly the same size as their litter brothers or sisters when adults.

i have a litter of pups on at the moment im keeping the "smallest" of them a bitch pup she is far from a runt though very strong just alot smaller than her siblings< she always gets picked on but put up a good retalliation with lots of fight, perhaps this is why they go on to be good workers, also the breeding is spot on too!!!!! :clapper:

I think it makes perfect sense that the runts should make better grafters. After all they have had to fight their corner from day one and put up with a fair bit of jip off their siblings. The biggest and strongest on the other hand gets everything they want with little effort.

Whether this is the case in reality is a different matter, and i dont know.

that's exactly what i said to my mate because he was surprised that i was having the smallest, surely its got to make a difference when they have got to work harder for everything.

hi mexlad. a while back, a good friend of mine that i dig with picked a so called 'runt' of a litter, while everyone laughed at him, thinking he was keeping them going. to make a long story short, 6 in the litter. the breeding was in the pups but barr one other pup his bitch ''the runt'' has turned into a great worker. she is up there, if not the best bitch ive ever seen. not too many laughing now. anyway thats my two cents. good luck anyway mexlad......................mudd dog................
