its ma baw 51
Theres no doubting on certain land, a smaller more agile dog will be better on rabbits, that goes without saying and its what anyone would expect. That said, while out "mooching" our biggest deer x is very often first to get to the rabbit, dont know if its age/experience or shes just one of those dogs thats in the right place at the right time, but she doesnt show herself up amongst the smaller ones. I wouldnt use her rabbiting on the land we run nowadays, she is too big to go racing through the kind of woods they run in, and when she does accidentally (out mooching) and she comes across game, she has on occasions injured herself , but no-one can knock her for determination and wanting to catch what she is up against. If someone asked me if I could have her again as a pup, to start all over again, the answer would be a resounding yes one of my biggest regrets is not breeding a litter of pups out of her, a few years ago when she was younger I very nearly did Most sensible poster on here..... Great photos btw, love the one with the dog going inbetween the tree, cracker. Quote Link to post
chartpolski 23,149
Whin, you say if a deerhound was any good "we would all have them", you said exactly the same about whippets and salukis ! But the point is we're not talking about PEDIGREES or PURE BREDS !! We are talking about CROSSES !! No body would dream of having a pure collie or beddy for lurcher work, but ALL the affore mentioned breeds ARE used in producing lurchers I know it's pointless debating the point with you, as you will just go off on another tangent, but if you read my 1st post on this thread, I was asking who worked and owned Deer X's.....not asking some one, (you), to come on and slate deerhounds ! Cheers. Quote Link to post
