Deerhound Crosses.

There seems to have been a lot of interest and talk about Deerhound X's lately. Are they making a comeback...... or have they never been away ??? I have a wee bitch who has only an 1/8th Deer in her, and also a 1st x Deer/Grey pup. I know lads who wouldn't know how to switch a computer on, who have run Deer X's with great success for many years, and still do ! Have they just been overshadowed by the Bull X's and Saluki hybrids ? I know for a fact many are still being bred and worked, who on here runs them ?

i dont see them about so much these days ,im sure theres still plenty about ,,yeah think they probebly did get overshaddowed .by other breeds , im not sure mybe its mre regional ,meaning further north than the midlands .years ogo it seemed to be all ..collie x,s amd the deer hound types!!

As always it's each to his own as far as crosses go. Personally I dont think I could be without a big deerhound cross, Macsen is my second, bought after meeting the breeder at the welsh game fair last year a couple of months after losing my previous deerhound. They are in my opinion fantastic gentle giants...maybe not the most versatile dog in the world or the most prolific of catchers, but, if like me you want a hound that you can occasionally take out for a bit of sport and catch the odd rabbit or two then they are perfect.There are some absolutely cracking deer x's out there.

I'd of thought 14 was a good age for ANY dog !! My Dobbie was well over 12 when she went, and my pure bred Saluki was 17; an exceptional age, I thought. Good looking dog, anyway !

I dont doubt for a second that there are, maybe I worded my reply wrongly, was just trying to get the point across that for my particular lifestyle the deerhound x is the perfect dog. There are many on here that will have you believe that they are too big to work seriously on rabbits or that they're only good for use on foxes or deer(pre ban). But after many years of owning them and watching them work they are surprisingly agile and quick for such large dogs.
