retrieving problems+

Recommended Posts

me and the family have got three pups bringing up for working, they are 13 months old they can do everything i ask them to do out the back garden but im finding it hard with one of them retrieving out in the field, fair enough when i first let him off he needs to go wild that is acceptable but then i get him to sit and stay throw the dummy make his stay look at me then fetch it he goes fetches it brings it back to me drops short or wont come close enough to give it to me, how can i get him to bring it to hand because he does it all the time in my back garden strait to hand and soft mouthed, i just need him doing it in the field can anyone give me a little advice ?

ALSO about lure corsing machines,

can anyone give me a website to buy one or a way to make one i made a temperery one out of a old bike it works but not good enough haha im more tired than the dogs after the corse so that would be most appreciated aswell.

thanks adam

Try this bud.Next time your out as the dog gets near to you start walking away slowly. Most dogs will fall in behind you.tell the dog to sit , stay or down. What ever works better for you.turn round and take the retrieve.atb. Catcherthumbs.gif

this is what I have to laugh at when you read about dogs retrieving balls etc at 12 weeks old.... big deal. It's a whole different ball game when said dog enters the field and its nostrils are filled with wonderful smells, exciting noises and its just chased and caught the most exciting thing its ever seen. there could be a couple of reasons why it stops short, it could be giving up its prize reluctantly or it could be afraid you'll catch the dog and end its enjoyment. Either way, the answer is the same. Take it out as much as you can to eleviate its fears. Keep to a strict routine regarding what happens i.e if your lamping, once rabbit caught use smaller beam so you don't illuminte other rabbits while he is retrieving and put him straight on the lead if this is what you do. If its daylight make sure you let him know you don't move on till that rabbit is in the bag etc. We all go through it mate, frustrating I know but hey, its an animal!!!

i accept soon as it gets in the field with all the new smells and new things to see its just a little frustrating first of all in the field he would run round with the dummy for ages and just not come back i got him coming back now just the giving to hand its getting a pain in the arse he is so good in the house i need to make sure he is spot on in the field aswell before i start making myself look like a dick, i think i am going to take him somehwere with his mother so she can show him how its done he will realise that the rabbit has to be back in my hand before he can have some more fun, the only problem he is alot quicker than the mother so he will be on the lead at all times just watching what she does. i think that might do the job if im lucky. cheers for the advice though lads

this might work but iv seen alot of dogs that wont bring a catch back when other dogs are there because they dont want them to have it you just have to try different things see what works when im doing retriveing work with the pup if

he starts arseing around i jog back so im still faceing the dog and that seems to work i might look abit of a tit doing it but thats what has to be done it dont bother me atb getting it sorted jenna
