desertdog 149
to bring mine into fitness about august time i get the bike out, it gets you fit and the dog, then when we start working them they get free running, and think about the distance they run in a night it keeps them fit, i always walk mine out, after a good nights lamping the next day. bird 9,916
trotting behind a bike mate builds up a dog, keeps them fit spot on, i do 10 miles aweek with him+bike. Its all on the road, so its keeps the nails down plus keep him fit.Ido trotting pace with him then, a few gallop's which really open's the lungs for them. This is enough it keeps them ticking over, to much road will only wear the pads down, so little+often is the key. Must hit 35 mph, can get a bit hairy if Bryn see's a feckin squirrel. Quote Link to post
klashnekoff 3
Im much prefer to mooch everyday and wlak the dogs agmonst the feilds than road walk, or in late summer/early season they are ran behind the motor. Quote Link to post
runem 533
do people think this is the best way to get a dog fit. never really done much with mine but have been the last few nights as my cars been broke so have to walk to the fields. cheers. its summer time,,a time for the dogs to take a well earned rest,,just long lazy walks to stop them getting bored, who needs a dog at peak fitness in the summer months.August/September get them get them doing the fitnes s routine, roadwork, running the very best grub..i,m sure everyone has their own methods of getting their dogs fit but thats an autum event not summer, thats my opinion and its worked for me for some time now. riohog 5,707
i free run the dogs every day , the only road walking they do is toand from the fields running dogs are desighned to run get em running !! agree with get em runnin rio but you dont just say to a boxer fight all the time before your fight do you lots of other work to put in before hand road works one of them does a world of good ive always done it an notice a drop in performance if you dont do it cheers yes ,but as the dogs ar out every day ,and maintain a good allround levell of fittness its alot easier to step up the fittness to peak in th back end .yes your not going to run the arse of them in the summer months ,but a good bit of free running early morning late evening ,will do no harm , Quote Link to post
Guest digthemdeeper
I walk me dogs on the road and through fields but i prefer the road as it shortens there nails..... Quote Link to post
sh 08 17
i run the dog along side the bike loose. so if she stops for a sh#t she has got to catch up. so she is sprinting as well as trotting. 15 min in summer months 30 min in winter. nothing worse than a dog that has been aloud to get fat and unfit through the summer, its harder work for the dog in the long run Quote Link to post
its ma baw 51
Only thing I reckon you get from road work that you cant get otherwise is hardened pads. Walking 3 miles to keep nails down when it takes a whopping 2 minutes to achieve with a pair of nail clippers isn't beneficial in my book. Aye, its exercise I suppose but not much. You couldn't walk 5 miles a day yourself then enter a marathon or a sprint and expect to be fit? You'll be walking fit but not much more which is alas, f*****g not much good when your expected to catch a fleeing animal for a living. I reckon the best way to exercise a dog through the summer months is having 2 dogs so they can chase one another and knacker each other out. If you take your dog out for a walk and it doesn't come home f****d, you've pretty much wasted your time in my book. Quote Link to post
