hi all abit of advise needed i got my dog just a little over 12months ago now got advised on learning the dog to retreeve first so i did and thought he would learn the lamp from then on but when i take him out he does not show any intrestd eg head on floor . but when i take him thru day he does hunt up etc any ways to learn a dog on lamp please thanks

Some breeds of dog need to be started on a lamp rather than in the day, so they dont hunt up then once they have got to grips with the lamp take them out in the day. There is nothing worse than a dog hunting up when the light goes out, scaring all the quarry in. this is only the way i do it. Ive alaways been told to do it this way and it seems to work for me anyway. A mate has got a dog started him off in the day and when he takes it lamping if he doesnt catch he runs round scarring everything in. But hes a good ferreting mouching dog

exactly, a dog can be good at both shit at both or good at one. dont know how you have come up with that bollocks. a dog might not have the pace for daytime in big fields but will on lamp.

For me hunting up at night when it's not supposed to is all down to a lack of recall training.

 

If it's recall is 100% spot on you won't have a problem.

the best thing to do is bring him out with dogs that no what they doing he should pick it up as you go a long thats wat i done with my bitch and she is comeing on nice mate he is a nice dog all the best with him

I know a lot of people don't like doubling up dogs but if you do it with an experienced dog it helps them alot,it has worked for me in the past.Good luck with it mate hope it goes well.

its true some dogs are unreal in the day but wont chase at nite on the lamp

Keep at it as it sounds as tho he's just used to using his nose with hunting during the day. Which is not a bad thing in a lurcher if you like mooching about during the day but can be a major fault in a lamping dog as he will continue to use his nose when he's out at night as he knows no different. If i was you id take him out with another dog to let him see what the lamp is all about. If you don't have another dog then wait to near the start of season and take him out on some 3/4 size rabbits as these tend to be easier to get close to an most of the time squat at the end of your beam. I wouldn't however run him doubled up on a rabbit with another dog unless you knew it was 100% rock steady at retrieving as you could ruin its retrieving or your own dogs as they sometimes get possessive over their quarry. Also work on your recall during the day as well as at night. Get him to come straight back to you during the day when you see him using his nose an he should hopefully get in the habit of doing this when you call him at night as well.

how many times has it been out on the lamp?

best to get it on some squatters at the start and keep bringin him out till he learns that when the lamp is turned on then he is to be looking down the beam..

it just sounds like inexperience to me.

often with younger dogs i had to hold the dogs head straight for them to see a rabbit getting up from a squatted position on the lamp and any running at any sort of distance they never seen at all.

the take them out lamping before daytime i have never done.

i do the opposite and never had a problem with mine hunting up.

just sounds like ya need to show him more and give him plenty of squatters to start him off and he will get the hang of looking down the beam.
