We had 104 in one night with 3 dogs. It's not so much about numbers as pest control as the land we were on is heaving with them. Woodga keeps a diary of how many he gets per season with dogs, ferrets, snares etc and it runs well into the thousands. The dogs could have kept going...it was us who needed to get to bed :D

Not one rabbit was wasted, some were kept as ferret food the rest were all minced and frozen.

I HAVE MENTIONED THIS BE FOR BUT I WILL SAY IT AGAIN, TAKE A LOOK AT DOXHOPE WEBSITE

HE TOOK OVER 200 IN ONE NIGHT WITH 3 DOGS . TWO DOGS ABOUT 80 AND THE THIRD GOT 50 SOMTHING .

HE USED TO BE ON THIS SITE, AND IS A WELL RESPECTED LURCHER MAN FROM THE NORTH EAST.

THURSO JACK WHERE EXACTLY IS THAT PLACE, I DONT MIND A 12 HOUR DRIVE :)

Yes Tomo we got them numbers, and similar numbers regularly, after that night we were out 2 nights later, and after that, three nights off the trot. Our dogs got big hauls, and on the way back from lamping we would park up and wait for day light to break, to get a couple of course of hares before we went home. I am a numbers man through and through... respect for lurcherman Im affraid goes with how many times they have been caught poaching, how much they have paid in fines or the number of times they have travelled to the fens..What we did in the north east, and Minshaw did in the north west is now irrelevent.

I think a 100 per night is possible, but it would be one hell of an achievment for 1 dog..

I agree with what you say doxhope, we are now living in a different age . And as for what you lads did in the past and the cumbrian lads did. I dont think it is irrelevent, i think it is an important part of our lamping history. You chaps were the pioneers of the big bags. I for one enjoy looking back at the bygone age of filling the game bag like you lot did. I am not one who is obsessed with numbers, but it still impresses me when some one is getting out and doing the biz.cheers wex :D

I have in front of me an advert from the Shooting News (may87) where it says

"Blue". Fantastic lamping dog. 95 rabbits in 3 hours!!

I swear!!

thats a constant rate of one rabbit every 1.89 minutes which is some going by anyones standards.

Could this be feasable? :hmm::doh:

Yes it was Vic minshaws blue, and yes i do believe the man will have done this. I think the time scale may have been slightly wrong, maybe a little longer than 3hrs. But lets not get in to all the minshaw shite again, these men were catching these bags. What people have got to understand is that the places were these bags were taken, were prime sites. They were dry stone walled spots, the majority of bunnies hadnt seen a lamp. The dogs in question were stamina packed lamping machines and the lads were equally as keen as thier dogs. I have seen a few dogs directly out of Blue, and they were stamina packed running machines. If you have the right dogs and the right spot you will take the hundred in one sitting. Speaking to a few lads who seen blue run and know his owner, they said the dog was a machine(a freak of nature). cheers wex.

I would love to see someone take a 100 rabbits in a night, though I genuinely can't see it myself. 30's & 40's taken regularly, I reckon are enough to test the dog. Anymore and you're just risking ruining your hound for no necessary reason. If the dog was capable of doing it, it would be nice to see the dog without any permenant internal or external injuries. Not saying it can't be done, but I would have to see it to believe it.

Out of curiosity, how many hares have people taken with a single dog on a lamp in a night? Has the magic 27 been reached?

Yip if you get a dog into the 30`s and 40`s this is a great achievement, you certainly cant catch 100 if theres not the numbers to catch, where I come from I know of only 5 dogs that have been into the 50`s of rabbits in one night since the early 70`s, and less than 10 that have been into the 40`s, and Ive been out with 149 different dogs in my time, and know almost everybody here that has kept lurchers. 100 rabbits in one night I doubt I will ever see in my lifetime now...but it is a possiblity for a good lurcher to achieve it

a lot of novices or people who dont hunt in areas where there are numbers do tend to think all they have to do is to turn up on the night :thumbdown: Ive seen loads of these folk carrying dogs off the hills..For the best lurchers to catch 100 they would have to run around 150, at least...acounting for some squatters on the night, and some short runs, the dog still has to do a hell of a lot of graft, as a profit hunter I always go for what I consider to be the easiest on the night, but it dosnt always work that way, as most lurcher lads should realise, nobody will catch 100 chasing rabbits on the tip of the beam, or on golf courses, but even on the best hunting grounds you would need a dog of well above average dog, with the important temperament to run rabbit after rabbit all night,
