alimac 882
what i would like to know is if theres any one out there that has the dog, the ground etc to do it this year????? we did just over the hundred last year with 4 dogs, i say 4 but there was a 5th that took about 3 in a park next to where we parked....it was us that jacked not the dogs, we packed in just after mid night, if the rabbits were squatting a little better and we had the urge to carry on the numbers could of been alot different.. so if you get a big bag of bunnies this year add a post to this thread saying what you took, what could of improved the count, and if you or your dog could have done better on the night... think i could do about 60 or so with my little bull x bitch, but i do have acsess to GOOD ground that a out and out rabbiting dog could do a good few more happy hunting alimac Quote Link to post
Guest Bunny Basher
WELL LADS , AS I HAVE STATED LONG AGO ON THIS SITE ........... IVE SEEN IT DONE A FEW TIMES ,...... AND INDEED DONE IT MYSELF ..... TWICE ! I THINK IT WAS ON THE MINSHAW THREAD ? WHEN MENTIONED ..... HOWEVER HERE GOES AGAIN FOR YOU LOT THAT MISSED IT ........... FIRST TWICE I SAW THE MAGIC HUNDRED PASSED WAS WHEN AS A KID I WAS CARRYING FOR A COUPLE OF LAMPERS THAT WERE LITERALLY MACHINES.... WHO .....WOULD AND DID WALK ALL NIGHT TILL MILK FLOAT TIME !!! AND WERENT PARTICUALLY BOTHERED WHERE THEY WENT ! EACH TIME ....... { WITHIN A FEW WEEKS OF EACH OTHER } THEY HIT WELL OVER THE HUNDRED AND I WAS THERE TO SEE THE OCCASION THEY USED TWO DOGS ...... A DEERHOUND CROSS AND A CUR GREYHOUND X DEERHOUND GREYHOUND .. NOW I DO BELIVE THEY HIT THE HUNDRED A FEW TIMES AFTER THAT .. HOWEVER I WASNT PRESENT TO SEE NOT TOO LONG AFTER I DID THE HUNDRED WITH MY TWO .... AND TEAM OF TWO CARRIERS , AND YEP THERE WAS RABBITS THICK AS HEDGEHOGS SPINES ON THE GROUND ....... LATER ON WHEN THE TEAM WAS STILL AT PEAK FITNESS I REPEATED THE FEAT WITH A CATCH WELL OVER THE HUNDRED .......... ONE DOG ? ............. HAVENT DONE IT MYSELF .............. THOUGH I HAVE NO DOUBT IT " CAN AND HAS BEEN DONE " PROBABLY THE BEST NIGHT I HAD WITH A SINGLE DOG WAS 48 OR 9 [ WILL HAVE TO CHECK MY DIARY ] WITHOUT A SINGLE MISS ..... I WAS RUNNING A MERLIN / LILEY BRED BITCH WITH WHOM WITH I KILLED UP INTO THE HIGH 70s BUT WHO ALSO MISSED A FEW ON THOSE NIGHTS , HOWEVER I HAVE NO DOUBT THIS RUNNING MACHINE WOULD HAVE TAKEN A LOT MORE " IF " I HAD PUSHED HER , I KNOW WHAT OLD CHALKIE MEANS WHEN HE TALKS OF THE LOOK IN THE EYE OF CERTAIN INDIVIDUALS AND THEIR DOGS ,.................. HELL ......... YOU HAVE TO BE A BIT CRAZY TO PUSH YERSELF AND YER DOG THAT HARD IF YER GOING OUT AND THINKING HELL WHAT AM I DOING HERE I COULD DO WITH A PINT ........... I CAN TELL YOU NOW...... " YOU "..... AINT GOT IT DEDICATION ......... PASSION ............ CALL IT WHAT YOU WILL ........... WITHOUT IT YOU AND YOUR JUKELS WILL NOT KNOW YOUR FULL POTENTIAL MINSHAWS ? .......... WELL WITHOUT A DOUBT ....... A VERY PASSIONATE LAMPER AT ONE TIME .......... WHO DID BRING OUT THE BEST IN THE RUNNING DOGS HE HAD .................... GOOD DOGS ? .... YES .....UNBEATABLE ????? .......... SUPER DOGS ?????? ............. NO ANDY SUPER DOGS WHO USED TO COME ON HERE ASKED FOR A BIT OF BACKGROUND TO THE LINE ............ WHICH I GAVE .......... ONE OF THE BITS OF INFO GIVEN IN PMs WAS .......... THAT A FRIEND OF MINE WHO LIVES ONLY A STONES THROW FROM ASD AND HIS FAMILY AND KNOWS HIM AND HIS KIN ............ HAD A MATCH AGAINST MINSHAW & BLUE , WITH HIS FIRST CROSS COLLIE X GREYHOUND ... MINSHAW WAS DESPARATE TO RUN BOTH TOGETHER .. MY MATE HAD NONE OF IT AND THE MATCH WAS RUN SINGLE HANDED ............ A MATCH WHICH HE WON EASILY WITH HIS FIRST CROSS CUR ....... THATS THE TRUTH ................... YET ............. LIKE SO MUCH WORKING DOG HISTORY ..... HAS BEEN CONVENIENTLY FORGOTTEN . ASD KNOWS THE STORY ................ SO ASK HIM ...................... I HAVENT MENTIONED THIS TILL NOW AS I HAVE NO AXE TO GRIND WITH ANYONE ............... HOWEVER ........... WHEN SILLY PRATTS .......... WHO BELIVE THE HYPE KEEP HARPING ON ABOUT UNBEATABLE STRAINS ......... ITS TIME TO THROW THE DICE AND LET THEM FALL AS THEY MAY DUCKWING I have heard this story before Duckwing but has ASD is in Blackpool and is no longer on this site anyway i will confirm this not bad for a collie x eh has this cross been slated has being no good in EDRD and other sites eh SJM What does W do these days? Now hopefully the doubters will believe that this can be done and done by colliex's either your friends or a Minshaw lurcher, after all this is what Minshaw lurchers are Quote Link to post
Guest FOXDOG
DUCKWING that was a very very good post It just goes to show that all these big names are sometimes not what they are cracked up to be, and to never look down upon the faithfull hound at the end of your lead Oh and I would just like to say BUNNY BASHER stop stirring shit, you seem to thinkk that minshaw lurchers are the only lamping dogs worth talking about and are quick to slate any other type When you have no dogs yourself and never had and go out with "Your friends dad" As you have previously stated on the forums P.S my best is 47 with my old dog sam.. All the Best Quote Link to post
wunwin 0
When you only have limited amounts of permission, taking a big haul of rabbits in one go buggers up the rest of the season, and maybe the next as well. I am more than happy with 10 in the bag each night, but that means i can go out all season, not once or twice a season. I think the danger with debating 100 + is that kids and newbys will think their dogs are shyte if they dont come home with a huge load of rabbits, and thats not a good thing at all. If your happy with your hound it doesnt matter how many rabbits it catchs in 1 night and feck what anyone else thinks. Quote Link to post
doxhope 2
Ive had some good nights out where numbers werent the important factor, a couple off a golf course, short grass between whinneys etc. Rabbits were that tight on the ground were I live because of so many lads with dogs ferrets etc, As long as you are happy, thats the main thing. Years, ney decades ago I had a bitch, lads from Bedlington, Ashington areas that had dogs then will remember her I can assure you...I was hearing of what the big lads were catching, and I had no faith in my own dog what so ever to emulate them...and this I believe effected the dog. A home truth here too, (that only a few blokes know about) I had so little faith in her, I took her to Morpeth and dropped her off in a housing estate That night I couldnt live with myself and went back to find her, she was sitting nearly in the same place where I left her, every time I think of this it brings tears to my eyes, a deed I can assure you I am not proud of, and which will haunt me for the rest of my life.. A great dog lad from Bedlington in the 70`s told me my lack of confidence in her was transmitted down the leader to the dog, and that I should forget the hype, and just take her for what she was. I did..(Cheers Spike) Slowley but surely the dog began to work, and she became the best all round lurcher Ive ever owned, or indeed seen...I hunted with her till she was 13 years old, and it wasnt one for the pot Im affraid, I worked the legs off that little buggar and she never let me down. Moral of the story?? So what if your dog dosnt, or in an area that houses plenty of rabbits, cannot take 100 rabbits in one night. You are in a far larger group of lurcher lads than those whose dog has, or can take this ammount. Has it been done....Yes Could it be done now....Doubt it Quote Link to post
Bosun11 537
I know it has been done and know lads who have done it BUT Doxhope you have just summed it all up with your last post.......painfully honest and wise.......very wise...... I salute you...... Cheers Quote Link to post

Butler 396
Why Can't it be done now?? Why doe's everyone seem to think dogs from " back in the day" were better that dogs now just look at hare dogs for example back in the 70- and even the early 90 3 out of 3 was the bench mark. But today you need to be killing 5 or 6 to call it a good dog. I think peoples understanding of diets and conditioning are better today than back then the only reason not as many lads are doing the ton these days is what do you do with 100 dogged rabbits?? Youve brought up a few points there matie, yes hare dogs for the fens have improved immesly, no one would argue with that, but for me yes the dogs that were around 20-25 years back that were bred for all round ability, that were suited to the heavy duty lamping game were better and Ive seen nothing over the last 10 years to change my view, The lurcher world is not exempt from fads and fashions, and the present scene is for saluki, bull and smaller whippet crosses, these all open new horizons for the lurcher world, as you say, such as better hare killers as with the saluki bred dogs, but, Im affraid they are not the best for producing dogs that are consistent takers of very large hauls of rabbits, as well as being above average all rounders on everything else, and Im not knocking any of these crosses, they will all readily fit the bill for someone. Youve got your 5 out of 5 hare killing mechines, what more do you want Its not just the dogs, its also the lads who hunt them, if someone in my day were stumpted as to what they had to do with 100 rabbits they would have been laughed out of Ashington.. Not enough of the right dogs, too many part timers and one for the pot men Quote Link to post
