EDean 0
I've been learning a little about lurchers from a good Australian friend. He sent me to this board to read more. I've spent a lot of time just looking at pictures and reading. I've seen a lot of very nice dogs and read some very good information on running dogs. I have not found much about lurchers in the US but have found that the UK has a wealth of lurcher knowledge. I was hoping that I could hear some opinions from some of you. Hope you don't mind! 1. Can a pair of lurchers be used to run several different game such as wild boar, coyote, fox, and rabbit? 2. Which first crosses would you recommend with the speed, agility, and strength to do these jobs? 3. Any multiple breed crosses or purebreds you would suggest? Note: My friend has greys and grey/bull crosses that he has used so I have access to these dogs. Thank you in advance! This is a great forum! Quote Link to post
waidmann 105
if you have access to and have seen the bull/grey working then go for them bud. they should have the strenghth to takcle bigger game(they will get knocked up at some stage, they will learn or not??!!). i would personally rather have them lighter for the bigger stuff and that should mean quicker on the smaller game. i have a bullgrey x bullwhippet which would be about right (3/4 long x 1/4 bull) i don't doubt he would have the speed and the cohonas for what you need (he is a pup at the moment don't get me wrong ). looking forward to reading about some coursing from you waidmann Quote Link to post
EDean 0
Thank you waidmann! He has only tried his bullgrey cross on boar so far. They do very well! I just wonder how well they could be switched over from game to game. Any pictures of your dog? I thought of another question as I was reading. It seems that most prefer multiple breed crosses over a first cross. Is this true? If so, why? Hope I'm not asking too many questions! Quote Link to post

EDean 0
Thanks for all the welcomes! I'll see if I can get in touch with Dan. Maybe he'll read this and chime in. The dog would be used to run a boar or coyote down on open ground much the same way you do for fox and rabbits when lamping. It would need to have plenty of speed, stamina, and then strength to hold. However, I don't know if this same strong dog would have the agility to cut and turn with a rabbit. My Australian friend's bullgrey crosses are proven on boar and his greys will run a coyote. Thanks again for the opinions! Would love to hear more about some crosses! What about some type of saluki cross? Quote Link to post
