A good old Rotty or Sheperd will do the job just as good.. with more drive probably...atb stabba

finding a good one thats the trouble pal.

ive had and can still get dogs from the dog unit however, them farm collies can be horrible buggers and with a good brain about them too, probally far superior to any other in the brain department.

How do you mean dog unit pal?

i have a contact in the thames valley and the wiltshire police dog unit mate.

Is that just for shepherd then?

they used to only have the shepherds but of late they have had rottys and the mallanois.was up there last week, they had 2 rottys on for the training, nothing like ive seen before,a racey type and total nutters.too head strong so these two may not make what is required.theyre drive is too hard.remember, aswell as say crowd patrol, they must be able to switch off and say go on the search for a lost child etc/multi task.a lad off here wanted one but at the time there wasnt any,he ended up with a failure from the MOD which was a complete header.like me,he chose one that biten the hand that fed it.

I've heard Rotts when used by police are only used as crowd control as their more intimidating then a GSD. The South Yorkshire police are importing Dobermans from Hungrey as there very versitile dogs.#

Hope much do these rotts cost when getting them off police mate?

Forgive me if things have changed but last I knew the police couldn't sell or pass on dogs as each dog is licensed by the home office.................Thames Valley took pups from a litter my dog sired and all made the grade.............

doberman, sheppard or boxers that are trained guard dogs are the go. You will not get away from any of these fullstop as they all can run like the wind and are extremly agile. Probably why so many of the worlds armed forces and police units use them. The other bigger bodied dogs such as the Rotti and various types of mastiff are a little more intimidating to look at but would be left behind by the other three in a chase. The American bulldog and APBT might be handy guard dogs too. Though the APBT could be somewhat problematic if you had multiple dogs guarding a yard due to their affinty to having a blue. Or for the more exotic the Dogo argentino or Cane corso look the shizzle.

p.s after having a good look at this dog via google they would make a very handy yard dog as they appear to have an unsurpased dislike of anything other than what they consider theirs to guard. You'd better make sure you get one as a pup though if you want it live with your lurchers otherwise i don't think you'd have any left as this dog seems to have even more of dislike to other dogs than most off the other dogs that you'd traditionally class as unfriendly.

Alot of good points in this thread, but the reason I personally chose the mali is because I am a handler and from the dogs i see they are the best, if there where a better breed then surely that breed would be coming through the system  also the only ex service protection (guard) dogs, you are likely to get are those that aint got it in them for protection work and are assessed as safe.

totaly agree!! The one and only is the Malinoi AND Dutch shepperd!

I train KNPV for several years and had differend breeds but the mali and the dutch shepperd are the best!!

At the moment I have 3 mali's and one dutch shepperd to train KNPV!
