Worming puppies

Good morning to you all, how nice it is to have so many lovely friends on this site, love you all! ( just read previous post from Beagles...!)

Bad news now though I'm afraid. My fella's mate had pups a couple of weeks after we had ours and last night one of them died at 5 weeks old :( . What makes me mad though is that it died unecessarily, not of the dreaded parvo or owt like that, it died because it was full of worms. The pup had been regularly wormed, but turns out that he had been using a product purchased from his local supermarket which probably wouldn't kill a worm if it was spoonfed directly to the squirming parasitic blighter! Moral of the story thus being use only products purchased and recommended by your vet-they only sell stuff that works. May cost a little bit more but what price a pup's life eh? We always use Panacur and it has never failed our pups, all of which are strong and healthy :victory:

i always used that puppy syrup stuff,, i think its johnsons but i'm not sure.... it seems to work well... roughly £2 a bottle, i think?

I used that stuff with my lurchers when they were pups and it worked perfectly, iv also used it on ferrets before aswell but never found any worms so either it didnt work or the ferrets didnt have any worms :hmm: Still tho good stuff for pups iv found ;)

i got a pup given to me once, it was really really bad with worms... the fur was all dandruff and flecky and the pot belly was huge... i gave it a slight over dose of syrup and next day the worms were all over the ground.. a week later i gave it another dose and the pup was shining....

We use Shirleys puppy wormer (available from pet shops) on all our pups every 2 weeks from 2 weeks old till they leave us at 8 weeks old, it's very mild and never upsets them, weve never had a problem with any litters with worms but in saying that all our adult dogs are routeenly wormed every 3 months with Drontal +.

i'd be suprised if it was worm infestation alone that had killed the pup, their might have been something else thats gone undetected wronge with it.

The vet diagnosed worm infestation as cause of death - who knows,I wasn't there. Anyway, my point was that penny pinching isn't worth it and the good stuff should always be used. Even if this wasn't the cause of it's demise, it must have been suffering with it's little body full of worms wouldn't you say? :(,and not forgetting the potential threat of contaminating humans!

We used Panacur every two weeks, till the pups left, and they were in great condition. We use Drontal on the older dogs. I'd never use anything else.

A friend of mine uses the Supermarket stuff on his older dogs, but it does not work. I end up giving his dog a Drontal.

i used stuff from the pet shop on my terriers once one day he shat a ball of worms the size of a golf ball, vet said he could of died due to using cheap stuff  now only use drontol +

a vet told me that the real mcCoy wormers will dissolve the worms inside the intestines... one dose is all that is needed. the cheap ones will work but you will spend more because they need done again a few weeks after the first dose... (thats adult dogs i'm on about)
