What Rifle Should I buy.

Recommended Posts

Hiya Guys,

I am after my first .17hmr rifle and after looking around I am totally confused, so I thought I would do a post on here and ask you guys with more knowledge for a little advice. The rifle must be in .17hmr and the rest of the criteria the rifle should match are as below.

1. Synthetic Stock.

2. Varmint/Heavy Barrel.

3. Good reputation for accuracy.

4. Stainless Steel Barrel if possible.

5. Carbine if possible.

6. At least 4 shot with magazine.

I will spend up to £1000 for the right gun with scope and sound mod, so what do you think I should get???

Please feel free to add your ideas.

I own a 17HMR Sako quad with a synthetic stock and heavy barrel. It has out standing build quality and accuracy.

There is a 5 shot and a 9 shot magazine to chose from but no carbine version.

CZ does have a model that answers all your needs but in my opinion not as good as the sako from a build quality point of view, im sure others may disagree with that.

The best advice i can give you is to pick up and try as many guns as possible as individual preferences differ.

You may also want to check out Anshutz which would be my second choice, good luck !

Hi Mate

I dont think Anschutz do a synthetic , so i guess that helps narrow down your search.

Guys,

I am really grateful for all your suggestions, I think I am coming down on the side of the CZ or Sako. I would go for the Anschutz if it had a model in synthetic but unfortunately they dont seem to do a synthetic model.

Oh Well.

I am going to go to a large gun shop and handle as many as possible to make the final decision.

Hi

Just my tuppence worth, CZ style 16" barrel it's all you want, (NOT VARMINT) with a nickel plated barrel and £12 brookes trigger kit, and spend the rest of the money on glass, I saw one go S/H for £250, that's plenty left over for a descent scope.

I've got a CZ .17 hmr with Meopta fixed 8 mag x 50 and can drop rabbits, crows and magpies at 150 yards easily, what more do you want? The sako is possibly a better made barrel and certainly trigger, but i don't imho think it outshoots the CZ, and doesn't warrant the difference in price unless you want the other barrel options, rather than a dedicated rifle.

Why would you not go for the varmint barrel, I have used the heavier barrel a lot and I find the heavier barrel helps keep the gun steady on long range shots.

Why would you not choose the varmint barrel?

I hope you read this in time !

I have been toying with the idea of customising my quad so i have been researching this area alot and talking to various gun smiths who speacialize in custom rifles.

I mentioned the option of shortening my barrel. I have always had the opinion that a carbine barrel is not as accurate as a longer barrel, but this is untrue.

Anyway from talking to a gunsmith who used to work at hornady tells me that the 17hmr round burns out after 18inches of the barrel.

So i guess i am trying to say by all means get a carbine barreled rifle but make sure the barrel length is no less than 18inches.

Some folks have had problems getting good groups with their CZ 452 Varmints maybe due to that model only having one action screw. I have one in .22 WMR and love it.

Not heard that before......

Another reason NOT to buy the Varmint is it will not shoot any better than a light barrel in the field...so why bother with the extra weight? If you want to lug around a heavy gun then fine, but no need from a shooting accuracy point of view, but some like heavy barrel, not me though!

Go to rimfirecentral.com all the info you could ever want about CZ rimfires. There are loads of guys shooting well under 1 MOA with their Varmints. But that is probably typical of most CZ rimfires. The Varmint isn't much heavier than other CZ rimfires though. The heavy barrel really isn't all that stout and it is in a carbine length. I carry mine for hours on end in our thick Texas woods with no fatigue at all. Personally I would like a 452 FS. Can you guys get Savage rifles over there?

I would go for a cz carbine mate its a nice little gun for the money and mine has been deadly accurate from day one. It might not have the same build quality as the sako but its a lot cheaper and if u change the trigger spring for a lighter one (the kits cost tuppence) u can get it just as sweet as the sakos.

the powder would have burnt out before then. the 18 inch barrel test your on about was found to be the best choice for length of hmr barrel for consistancy.

for what little fps you lose i wouldnt worry about it.
