Edgar 1
Hi all, I am thinking of buying a HW77 to replace my HW57. I bought the 57 a few years ago but it feels a bit light now. Anyway I might buy a 77 but I have heard they can crush your thumb in the breech! Is this true? or is this just with faulty guns or handling. Also what barrel length would you advise. I want the one that balances better and cocks easily. Quote Link to post
stealthy1 3,964
Some folk take the bear trap off the HW77's so that the gun can be uncocked if you dont want to fire it, the problem with the HW77 is that with the bear trap on it cant be uncocked, and the safety cant be put on after it has been switched over to live fire, so if you want to make the gun safe, you have to fire it whether you want to or not, These are the guns that will nip the end of your thumb off if you dont hold the cocking leaver while loading a pellet, if it happens to go off. I've had a HW77 for years, and I still have both my thumbs Quote Link to post
Edgar 1
That's good to know stealthy, so as long as I hold the lever while loading I will be ok. Anybody going to comment on the barrel length question? I only want to know which balances better, full length or carbine? Quote Link to post
silentshot1 206
Hi Mate I've got a HW77k .177 with a venom Muzzle Break so it's about as long as the full length version. To be honest, it's a bit ungainly at first if you're used to smaller guns, but once you get used to it, it's an absolute dream. The balancing and weight give you excellent target hold, coupled with PCP accuracy. I have found the transition to a lighter PCP more difficult than expected due to not having the weight to aid aiming and still use HW77 for longer range static bunny bashing. I've never had any nasty near misses with the breech so wouldn't be able to comment and the gun is 20+ years old. Quote Link to post
Edgar 1
Thanks for that. Yeah I realize its a heavy rifle, but I think that's the way to go. I bought the 57 several years ago but now I find it a bit light and I can't hold it as steadily as I used to. I wouldn't bother with a silencer myself so I am still unsure. If I see one second hand for the right price I will probably get it whatever length it is. Anyone else willing to advise? Quote Link to post
andyfr1968 772
They're a lovely springer. I had one in .177 when they first came out. I feel really old now... As has been said, at least you can hold the lever back when you load the thing, not like my Diana 52. I wouldn't be too fussed wether it's a K or not, there's only a couple of inch's in it. I know some women who'd really argue the toss about 2" but for an airgun under most circumstances, it's no big deal. Cheers. Quote Link to post
