ellir0305 9
i am in the process of extending one of my hutches into a multi layer court for my jill and her kits (when she comes into season) and i am a little short on plywood. but as a tight fisted person i would rather reuse materials i have than fork out any money. so i was wondering if i could use some mdf i got of a packing pallet to make the middle shelf? or will it harm the ferrets? cheers atb rob Quote Link to post

longnetter 32
I might be wrong here mate, but I think MDF does contain some pretty harmful chemicals . The dust when cutting this stuff is harmful . I'd dig deep and buy a bit of plywood if I was you . ATB Quote Link to post

stealthy1 3,964
Think along the lines of Wheatabix, because MDF is about as much use out doors Quote Link to post
wullieh 53
a mate of mine thought he would save money by building a 3 storey hutch with MDF and only to end up costing him more money as when it got damp as it will, it ended up swelling making it hard to open and shut the doors. ferreteressex 1
i made a 4 story hutch completley out of 10mm mdf last summer, as i got all the off cuts for nothing. i used oil based inside,an outside some black water based primer i had laying about, left it about a week before putting the ferrets in because of the fumes, the inside is great cleans up great no swelling at all even in the toilet an water areas but i had to re coat the out side last week as it is beginning to swell in places that the sun doesn't get to, so in my experience if its free wood an thick MDF then oil base undercoat it all inside an out an it would be ok,but ply would defiantly last for years with the same treatment. an yes MDF dust is very bad for your health its been band in the usa i think Quote Link to post
