Vasectomized Hob?

Recommended Posts

I was just lucky with him really , i have had other hobs i was glad to get castrated

I think we will get another jill or two this season. I was lucky to get a very nice hob from mike1458 on here, now named co-co (the hob not mike). I think he will visit the vet for a vas op next month as I'm recovering from our holiday expenditure and have a sneaky plan to buy a shotgun if my mate passes it by on Sunday.

Just to say it ok to share a vas hob if you know who owns it and that it has not been past about and the person who owns it knows there ferrets have been 100% healthy. as for borrowing one from a stranger then you must remember that you do not get condoms for ferrets and you run the risk of spreading disease such as ECE (green slime disease) if your healthy ferrets were to catch this then you might loose them all or at least some of them, and would prob most def miss out on some of next seasons hunting while you are trying to get your top ferrets back into tip top condition after they loose most of there weight,

ECE only needs to be passed onto one ferret to allow it to effect every ferret that you have so please be carefull on sharing a vas hob.

if you have got the room id say look to the future and get one of your own and save money in the long term.

ECE is very easily picked up on clothing & shoes ... people going to shows all over the place etc ... its not exclusive to vasectomised hob sharing

Yes Kay i am very aware of this but Ece and STIs can be passed on by a vas hob and people should be made aware of what might happen if they share dont you agree.

I have never heard of any std's being passed about by anyone to be brutally honest.. what std's are ferrets susceptible to ?

Ok mayb not as much as sdi but sexually transmitted disease, can be the likes of ece and others, but there is infections known to ferrets if you wish to google them on breeding / stis or ask on ferret forums

When we had a vas hob, this was always in the back of my mind. A friend did ask me if I knew anyone with a vas hob and I said no, simply based on good stockmanship and the fact that I didn't want to risk the health of my business of ferrets. Take it from someone who has had one ferret drop after another, it's not a pleasant thing to happen and if I am to be honest the vets that we have used for our ferrets over the years are less than knowledgeable. This is most certainly turning out to be a very interesting thread indeed, I had never heard of ECE. I would say that the risks of an STD would be equal to any other animal put at stud, but then many people simply don't care about the welfare of ferrets and see them as nothing more than disposable rabbit seeking missiles, as such the risks would obviously increase. It would be really interesting if there is anyone who has actually transferred a virus from one court to another.

When we had a lot of ferrets, any new ferrets would be kept in a quarantine hutch for two weeks before I would introduce to the rest of the war weasels. In resent times we have only had two ferrets, Duke (hob), Coo key (jill) who died from adrenal disease, so we got Faith (jill) to keep Duke company, then Duke died from a spreading tumour after his tail was amputated and now we have Co-Co to keep Faith company. It seems as if there has been more research carried out in to these little creatures than ever before which is really good. Back ten years ago, most vets around us had never ever had a ferret come in for treatment.

Any of the 2 ways will bring your jill out of season if you can get the jill jab done cheap enough and you

only have a couple of jills to take out of season then do it that way but check prices 1st we got quoted £37 a ferret for a friend which is just crazy and greedy but there are a lot cheaper vets out there other than mine

We have 10 jills to bring out of season so a vasectomised hob is the better way for us at least you are sensible enough to get your jills sorted rather than breeding unwanted litters of kitts good luck with whichever way you choose to take them out of season

The simplest way to avoid any kind of infections / viruses being passed on is to quarantine any new arrivals ...... thats should be an absolute must if you take ferrets in

Bit of a long shot i know but i just wondered if anyone in the South Yorkshire area had a vasectomized Hob i could borrow for a few days to bring my jills out of season, If not i'm gunna have to breed them and i cant be bothered with the hassle. Thanks
