bird 9,916
if you do that you will feck it up, its only a rabbit. 1st it bring back thats good, when it comes in to you leave it ,just pat the dog. stand there (dont pull it from its mouth)when it had enough of the rabbit (then)take it. When it gets older and it gets a few (10-12)runs it will drop or give them back to you no prob. just take your time with it. Quote Link to post

stormrider8 59
I agree with Bird, just take your time with her but when she does give the rabbit up, praise her loads and shell soon get there. I always bring my pups up retreiving a rabbit skin which helps alot when there in the field but they can still be reluctant to give it up!! Quote Link to post
the bullcross man 6
sounds like bird knows what he is talking about Quote Link to post
Stewy 1
my lucher bitch is 18 mouth old it good on the lamp but when it brings bunnys bk it will not let go till it crushed it . and i If my bull cross brought one back alive i don't think I'd be too impressed. I dont try to force it as they just hold tighter and you end up having a tug of war!! Best of teaching them young!! Quote Link to post
skycat 6,173
Best way is to put dog on lead without trying to take rabbit off it, carry on walking: when you next spot a rabbit in the beam light it up well, and if the dog has half a brain it will drop the rabbit it is carrying and be eager to go and catch the next. But you must start walking straight away once the dog comes back to you carrying that first rabit: dogs are less likely to crunch a rabbit if they are moving along and looking for the next catch. When you see that the dog is ready to let go of the rabbit say 'give': you'll see its jaws relax a little and if its pricking its ears and looking at the new rabbit then that is the time to get the first catch away from it. Be prepared to waste runs, rabbits etc while the dog learns and don't get upset with the dog, just stay calm and focused and be ready to grab the rabbit from the dog the moment it looks like letting go. Also, the more it catches the less likely it is to want to mess about with its catch: for a lot of young dogs its all too exciting when they first start catching: keep running the dog and making sure it gets success and it should grow out of it.
