Guest alifeofhunting
just wondering if you lads work as hard on things like stay, wait, sit, not pulling on lead, leave , recall things like that. some lads seem to say as long as it takes quarry i dont care, ive walked numerous dogs on a nite dragging your arm off, wont listen, wont release quarry once brought back. i personally find that the sit and wait and not pulling on lead , wont jump until told to, heel, make it so much more rewarding and easier rather than fighting with a pulling dog all time and fighting to get it to wait or stay in the van. i understand i have a colliex and may be easier for this dog to be trained like this due to brains but surely any dog can pickup basic commands. what do you lads think is all training important or are you just interested in dog catch rate and nothing else????????? Malt 379
I think it's important to have control over my dogs when I'm out in the fields with them, so recall is the single most important part of training for me, followed by 'leave it'. Dogs will hunt all by themselves, they do what comes natural. Where the training comes in is getting the dog to go against it's natural instincts and do what it's told instead. JMO. FLEESNIPER 0
i like my dogs to behave if i take them home or to a friends house or just in the field so i try to train them in domestic aswell as field skills flee Quote Link to post
all.rounder 3
i think that recall is the most important thing to learn a dog.theirs nothing like a dog hunting up by its self.my bitch done this the last couple of times i was out.and theirs nothing so fcukin of putting.so i didn't go out lamping with the mates the last 3 or 4 times.but i think i have got it out of her now.she just started 2 do it out of the blue.i think it was the pup in her. the bullcross man 6
i dont use a lead while i am out lamping so they have to know the basics befor catching anything Quote Link to post
bigoy19706 276
when i got my 1st dog i did not no that much about the hunting game and i just got it out with dog that was allredey lamping and did not do any basic training with him he is naw just a pet it is to much like hard work to take him out because he pulls that bad on the lead he will not jump and when you slip him with a over dog he just wonts to play fight with it Quote Link to post
Guest alifeofhunting
alot said for basic commands, all other lads are struggling to hold a dog jump a fence, hold the lamp. great being able to tell dog to wait whilst your over and then he can jump. i dont think id have it any other way. at the end of the day whos working who lol Quote Link to post
THE DEMON 93
i try and teach my dogs at an early age and the most important is its (recall) out of any other training then comes sit, stay, retrive, then jump when its older but its all great fun learning them that whats makes a good dog atb Quote Link to post
jimmy100 48
training is essential in a lurcher you may aswell not bother going out with an untrained dog it will only ruin the night!! as for training a dog to catch well i think thats pretty hard it has to learn that itself while out Quote Link to post
stroller 341
without training whats the point? it turns out not to be a pleasure for you or the dog. Quote Link to post
mC HULL 13,128
basic things for me are recall and i don't mean standing there screaming get here now when your out lanping i like a dog to come back to me straight after the run whether with the bunny or noti like to do retrieving from a young age but as for walking good on a lead most dog's out for a lamp will pull especially if theres a few dog's jumping is a must aswell no good carrying dog's over thing's and to lay and be quiet in a motor plus i alway's socialize them to people, dog's and sheep horse's etc if a dog doe's that and fill's the pot i'm happy Quote Link to post
