i watched a dvd last night, simon whitehead doing some ferreting,in the film hes brining on a young dog, trouble is when the few bunnies that did slip the net the dog was off after it,but not really getting a clear run, wooded area, well thats what it looks like, and the dog im sure was opening up,not really what i want so what the trick here then, start them young and risk it doesnt seem to be the answer, should he have had the dog tied up maybe?

on approachin a warren i like a dog to search the imediate area an put anything above ground to ground

when a pup is young ill take it to the warren i have chosen to work, keep dog on slip if its liable to wander

drop your ferrets, nets an anything else, then walk the dog round the area bushing

after a few times the pup will do it itself if its got a brain,

when netting up i also like the dog to sit or walk round warren an not over the top, i dont mind a dog sniffing holes when ferret is to ground as iv seen the dogs snatch bunnys oot the mouth a holes that widda went back down if the dog wasnt there

netted bunnys must be left, or pinned, till depatched an unnetted, dog should guard hole till net is reset

oh aye an it must not, piss up me leg or over me ferret box lol

only way to get a good ferreting dog imo

take it ferreting, an loads of it

know what your saying mate cheers

If you bring up your pup to be calm and obedient it will be able to sit back and watch you net-up buries and learn exactly what is going on from its first trip. It's amazing how they learn for themselves what is required by observation and experience .As has been said, too much encouragement risks producing a dog that false marks or potters annoyingly from hole to hole disturbing rabbits and wrecking nets .post-13773-126989624711_thumb.jpgpost-13773-126989614729.jpgpost-13773-12698961235_thumb.jpgpost-13773-126989609559.jpg.

Dogs which can't be trusted to stay where they are placed or even worse have to be tied up during ferreting are a pain.On the other hand a dog must trust its own judgement when it comes to breaking a stay to give chase to an escaping bunny or pin a netted one .After a while it may be trusted to reposition itself without hovering too close to the holes and pushing the rabbits back to ground . These things along with marking come with practice .
