my new dog

Recommended Posts

picking up this fella on wednesday!! he is in a rescue centre and was going to be put down today   :wallbash: :wallbash: so i thought id give him a chance!! i took him a walk out yesterday afternoon he is a nice dog got good tight feet and uses his nose alot on rabbit runs and is sound with my other dogs but will find out more when ive had him a while. he is only 12 months old so got time to work with him over the summer for next season but not expecting a world beater just see how he does. still got his balls aswell so might use him on my bitch in a few years time but got a long way to go before that happens just really happy to have a blue greyhound as i like them!! he was a stray and been in a pound since 9 months old so he has been well looked after and socialised and not brought up in racing kennels as ive seen ex racers and some are nuts with other dogs but he has got none of that. he is racing bred tho as he has got ear tattos but ive never had a pure grey before i know they are not the best working dogs but it dont matter with him he can just tag along with the lurchers but anyone who has worked them and got any tips on them is more than welcome to comment

thanks to you all  im glad you all like him i no i do!! on the weight issue i see what your saying but i think its more lack of muscle that makes him look thin as he didnt get walked for 2 months as they are not allowed to go out while owned by the council :icon_eek: :icon_eek: the council pound were gonna put him down today but the rescue centre im getting him from seen him on some website on thursday picked him up on fri and i put a deposit down on sunday!!! im really made up about him ive always wanted a blue greyhound dog (or should that be bluehound!!!) but i didnt fancy an older ex racer and couldnt find any litters of pups so to get one 12months old with a collar, lead, fully vaccinated,wormed,4 weeks free insurance and vet checked for £135 is spot on by me!!! the owners of the rescue centre were really sound people aswell i never realised how hard there job is so to help them out im collecting there empty dog food tins every two weeks when im on the scrap as they were paying to get rid of them before so the money can be put to better use!! cheers all again

What sort of "rescue" puts down a good dog

My best advice is to work on his recall until it is perfect and watch out for obstacles. Educate him as you would a lurcher. Its good you got him young.

Keep his confidence up and dont run him on anything he has no chance of catching.

Fair play to ya. With his history, you'd never know, he might never have chased game. If it was me, I'd keep him well away from game and concentrate on obedience, retrieving and teaching him about jumping and barbed wire and not chasing livestock. You will have plenty of time for catching next season.

Best of luck with him

your spot on  and ill keep anyone interested in him posted on this thread
