Any tips on what you should do before venturing into the ferreting game,is it a case of a waiting game to get up to scratch with working ferrets?

Did you Lose it as in Died or as in can't find it?

As most will be thinking, Get a Locator :wallbash: You surely can't just walk away from a ferret that didn't come back out of a hole? I'd not be able to sleep right knowing my ferret was out ther ion it's own, and i'd not be thinking, oh well i'll go get myself another :wallbash:

If you meant lost as in died, then i'm sorry if i got it wrong.

Hi mate

The first thing you did wrong was not to read up on the subject...big mistake that :wallbash:

The second was not to buy a locator  ....absolutely essential dress for any working ferret.....I don't care what anyone says to the contrary .

And the third was to leave that ferret behind  .....NEVER leave your ferret behind......go back and see if you can find it .

as everyone says get a locator and get to know your ferrets until the baby rabbits have grown or u will always b digging itwill b late septo early oct before i start again. next give the ferret time to find the rabbits and enter it into every hole you can find , feed them 3 hours before you go so they are fed and had a sleep. they should work great then. its also a good idea to take some day old chicks (dead) when you go to lure them out of the hole and as a treat when you finish. last but not least read as much as you can about ferreting wether it be books or on forums like this one and you will get it in the end. every ferreter learns something new every year and everyone also has there own way of doing things. hope this helps. oh keep going back to look for your ferret you may be lucky and it may show its face again

Thanks very much for the advice chaps, the above was a innocent post chaps, the guys i were also ferreting with today and the time before were also newbies to the ferreting game,we tried to find the ferret several times but to no luck, gutted is not the word i'm devastated at loosing my ferret, the land we worked them on one of the guys lives there so he said he's going to try and find it,as i say i'm a newbie and find comments such as calling me an ass no use what so ever. thanks again to the member i'm quoting as its the most useful post on this topic. I shall do my homework before i venture out ferreting again,i've learned the hard way now and i think i will purchase a ferret finder very shortly.

Thanks again,sid.

ps - Some ways to MAYBE get your ferret back. Put the box outside the hole with some shreded paper and a paunched rabbit or even better a cage trap with a paunched rabbit in, if your lucky you'll find your ferret in it next morn.

the old wives tail is only hunt rabbit the months that have an R in but skip march as you do get baby rabbits in march but in the meantime i suggest that if you are gonna go ahead and get another ferret then get yourself a good finder,me personally would say the mk3 but learn how to use the l.e.d's then you will appreciate it,get yourself a good ferret carry box, spade, hemp or spun nylon purse nets, ferreting book by james mckay and dont use your ferret untill september but handle from now till then everyday also it is a waiting game so your gonna need alot of patience also put the collar on the ferret tight but not to tight, make sure you can turn it on there neck but not pull it over there head and remember to keep quite when ferreting, good luck mate

buy a locator before you get another ferret, your goosed without 1.try to avoid ferreting near quarrys, they can drop down cracks and not get back up as they aint as wide as rabbits.dont be scared of your ferret and snatch at it when you pick it up it makes them skulk in the hole and in some cases stay down.if you lose it block all the holes and keep going back they come out in the end or like [bANNED TEXT] else said box or trap baited, but this is easily avoided with a locator.wrong time of year now to be ferreting lots of young down.try squeaking and thumping down the hole that might draw your ferret out.hope you find it soon mate, dont give up on it,it deserves better.try and get out with [bANNED TEXT] who knows thier onions you cant beat experience, theres more to it than droping the ferret in a hole.atb
