im looking to buy my first hunting dog but was woundering is there a good breed i can use for retreiving from the hide and ferreting in the winter also would like it to be a family dog to live in and out with my rotti i have no experience in training hunting dogs so would this determine the breed to. thanks for reading

get a cocker mate they good alround dogs but very hard to train i got 2 both for rabbits and gun dogs family pets to well they got control of the house not me easy to get on with to and mix with other dogs

spot on mate i have 2 cockers,1 dog and 1 bitch,i found both pretty easy to train,i take the bitch out ferreting with me in the winter and she is a great wee dog.atb

my dog trained himself the bich is a hand full she is so head strong finding her hard to train thats what you get when you get one off a keeper

This is not just my opinion but a spaniel is an optomistic hunting dog and wants to be on the go hunting at all times springers are hyper cockers a worse get a book or two about gundog training from the libery and the authors who are mostly very experienced dog people will say the same if you want a life of hell then try and get a cocker to sit all day in a hide (its hard enough trying to stop them from belly crawling from a sitting position.!) A retriever type might suit your needs as a lab can settle easyer in a hide and of course they love to retreive and most dogs will except ferrets if they are introduced to them at a young age and it dos'nt take long before they learn to mark rabbit sets.HORSES FOR COURSES.ATB LURCHER ?
