saxonmaster 74
im looking to buy my first hunting type dog and i hope this isnt a stupid questions, but was woundering whats the best breed for me if i want to use it for retreiving from the hide and ferreting in the winter i wont be lamping and i have no experience with hunting dogs only ever had rotti,s so never done any training to hunt so would this determine the breed as im a novise for i.e is there a breed that is easier to train for some one just starting out. also would like it to be a family dog to live in and out with my female rotti and be good around my 3 kids. i hope i dont affend anyone but i was told not to buy a mix breed with bull in it because they can be unpredictable now if i listened to all the people that say dont touch some breeds if u have kids i would of never brought a rotti and i have had 3 and all been excellent with people young and old so i dont go with that but would like to hear your views please thanks for reading. waidmann 105
if the main quarry will be daytime rabbits i would go for a whippet based cross(or pure whippet), possibly a beddy x whippet? bull x's are no different to any other dog bud(i have one here and he is a lamb ) they will do the job in the right cross too,i would go for something around 22-25 inch tts in both crosses. they will both retrieve for you from a hide, its just training. if sitting out in the cold maybe think of a long haired lurcher. there will be about 500 different answears here bud waidmann Quote Link to post

Stewy 1
You will get a lot of advice on here mate with different opinions. I started with a Saluki X Hound she was like a puppy around people and when she went onto the field she done her job well. Great for day time work. Quote Link to post
poacher3161 1,766
You say hunting type dog but not if you mean a lurcher as a springer can be a good ferreting companion and would fit well into a family enviroment would retreive from an hide but would not catch rabbits that slipped the nets unless it was at the side of them.
