-=Magwitch=- 29
I am after a new lens for my Canon but can't decide what to go for, I am on a tight budget (times are hard) and want a fast focusing lens for taking pictures of the dogs working and with a minium 300mm focal length. Any suggestions?.......................
bob.243 9,079
I have a Sigma 28 x 300MM on my Nikon, and it takes great pictures, the Sigma would be cheaper than the equivalent Cannon, unless you were a real professional I think the difference in picture quality between the two would be hardly noticeable. MuttleMcTuttle 21
There are a few lenses in the 70-300 range, but once you go beyond 300mm they start getting a bit pricey. There is the Sigma 150-500 which has a massive range, and is a massive lump of a thing. I think it's around £700 which isn't a lot for a lens of that range, but you get what you pay for... Another possible is the Sigma 120-400, which is around £600 and has some quite good reviews bearing in mind a Canon 100-L will set you back twice that. Depends on how fussy you are about image quality really. A prime lens is going to deliver the goods, but they are very expensive. The canon 75-300 usm lens is quite highly rated. I have a 70-300 IS canon lens I'm thinking of flogging, but I'd want more for it than a brand new 75-300! Tbh, IS is a bit of a luxury you don't really need for things like running dogs, because you'll be using a fast shutter speed anyway, so I wouldn't make that a priority. I'd recommend a budget canon lens over a budget Sigma or tamron any day so maybe keep your eye out for a decent S/H lens? I don't suppose I can interest you in a lightly used canon 70-200f4L? A snip at £400?
