Lead free ammo?

Recommended Posts

Don't know if anybody read shooting times this week but there was an article about the possibility of deer stalkers being forced to use lead free ammunition in the future. Something to do with tiny lead particles ending up in the carcass. If this happens then I can see lead ammunition being totally banned. This may not sound logical but this doesn't mean it couldn't happen! How would A lead ammo ban affect air gunners? I have no use for steel/plastic pellets myself, does anybody think they are any good? What about copper ammunition? Is there any currently available, or other metals? Or would lead free pellets be the end of air gunning? Are barrels on current air rifles up to shooting harder ammo? What does everybody think?

i think most pellets are lead/tin alloys anyway so i doubt it will make much difference with all tin, you can get copper pellets now i think or they might just be copper coated :hmm: anyway they were really inaccurate through my gun and i hope i will be able to use lead pellets for the rest of my days

I see your point, but the legislation doesn't always make sense. I think if lead is banned for deer stalkers and restricted for shotgun users then air rifle pellets could be the next thing to go. Where would this leave us?

i think it would leave us with even less power to play with because there are many springers out there that struggle 12 ft-lbs with lead pellets, all tin will be even lighter so ft-lbs goes down.

Not always, RB, the dynamic's I've been useing in my .20 90 are 12 grains and the .177's I use in my RWS52 tip in at 9.5. I think the .22's are 14...

I see what you mean though if they were a conventional shape and size but these are a kind of bullet shape and they're pretty solid.

Cheers.

i'm not sure but i think deer shooting bullets are designed to break up and cause maximum damage. i have never found a pellet still in mmy quarry and if you are doing head shots only how can this put lead in the meat?

Nearly...

Deer bullets have to expand reliably, but you don't want them to break up, or cause too much damage - dead deer are venison after all! Varmint bullets (Vmax etc) are designed to break up.

Deer bullets can make a fair mess though....

I've used tin pellets in my lightning, they were fine but expensive!!

I was seriously thinking about trying the Gamo Raptor PBA pellets (Poly Ballistic Alloy) these are 18k GOLD PLATED pellets, that should give (according to Gamo) a 25% increase in velocity.

Since thinking about it, I have read many reviews of them on review-centre, etc and I have found only one review that claimed anything but crap about them :icon_eek: and that reviewer said that they were by far the SINGLE most EXPENSIVE pellet he has ever fired.

Gamo, claimed match accuracy at 30 yards aparently, most people were getting 1 to 3 inch groups, so if that match grade accuracy, then I'm taking all the golds at the next olympics :11:

I'll save my pennies :D

I have tried the 'Promethius Pellets' as my son got them for me a couple of years back, he got me 4 tubs, I've still got 4 tubs bar about 10 pellets.

I fired one into my portable backstop, the plastic body stayed put :D the metal core and head went through the metal of the stop. I've only ever had that once before with my Xbow :gulp:

Hi waidmann,

No the Sabot jobbies have a flange type jacket that springs open somewhere between leaving the muzzle and hitting the target. They were initially developed for military or special forces I believe and the idea was that a round would kill or injure the target but would not hold any Striations that could identify which barrel it was fired from, this was perfect for assasination jobs ;)

They were then developed for airguns years back but suddenly ceased to exist again I am lead to believe that (and I am open to correction as always) the guy who developed the promethius pellets had something in the patent that stopped people producing Sabot's unless they paid him for the privilage :(

I know of only two people who have a quantity of the original Sabot pellets.

Dear stalker's don't generaly go for head shots, they go for the heart-lung are.

Cheers.

sorry me not wording i correctly i meant airgunners only go for headshots so how could pellet fragments contaminate meat.

Ah. Sorry, Aaron, I see what you ment now.
